57. John Wesley Uzzell

John W. Uzzell
Among the many estimable citizens of Mississippi County, Ark., who havepassed to their long home, but who, from an early day, were intimatelyand prominently associated with the county's development, the name ofJohn W. Uzzell can not be omitted. He was born in Columbia, Tenn., and isthe son of Elisha and grandson of Thomas Uzzell, who commanded a vesselin Gen. Lafayette's fleet when coming to the succor of Gen. Washingtonduring the Revolutionary War. After that war Thomas Uzzell settled inIsle of Wight County, Va., where he secured a large tract of land, married, and became the father of two children, a son and a daughter. Thefamily all died with the exception of Elisha, the son, who inherited theproperty. The father had emancipated all his slaves before he died, andafter Elisha came into possession of the property he sold it, and movedto Columbia, Tenn., where he remained until 1859. He then went to livewith his son, John W. Uzzell, in Mississippi County, Ark., and died therein 1864 at the age of eighty four years. John W. Uzzell was married in1859 to Miss L. T. Evans, daughter of George H. Evans, who was the nephewof Gen. Tipton, for whom Tipton County, Tenn., was named. Jesse Evans, father of George H. Evans, came in the canebrakes from Tipton County,Tenn., to Mississippi County, Ark., about the year 1841, and brought onlyhis servants with him at that time. He opened a small tract of land wherethe widow of George H. Evans now lives, and there died in 1844. At thattime his son, George H. Evans, who was living in Tipton County, Tenn., inorder to hold his place, moved his family on it, while [p.562] he went toHelena to prove up, which be did the same winter. Mrs. Uzzell, whosememory is very good, remembers the first meeting she ever attended in theneighborhood, her father and the preacher being the only men in thecongregation who wore coats, all the rest, and there was a house fill, wearing hunting jackets, and all carried guns. Upon entering the churchthey would deposit their guns in a corner behind the preacher. The menalso carried side-arms, generally knives, and were prepared for allemergencies. On coming to Arkansas in 1844, the family came in abarouche, and on the trip from the river over to her grandfather'5 Mrs.Uzzell remembers that there was but one opening from the river ferry thefarm, a distance of twelve miles. The cane on each side of the road wasso high that it would form an arch over the top of the barouche. In 1859they selected the spot where Mrs. Uzzell's house now stands to erect abuilding, and in choosing a spot to dig the well, which they wanted acertain distance from the road, they were obliged to stand Mrs. Uzzell inthe saddle on the back of a gentle horse to Measure an object for herfather to go by, on account of the cane. The place is now one of thepleasantest and most desirable to be found in the county, and the velvetylawn and brilliant beds of flowers attract the eyes of all beholders. Inthe rear of this stands the large double log-house. Back of the house isa large cistern which will hold 500 barrels, and there is also a goodwell. Mrs. Uzzell Owns now, with her family, about 2,000 acres of land, with about 300 acres under cultivation and keeps about ten families onthe place. They raise nearly three-fourths of a bale of cotton to theacre, although they sometimes run more than a bale to the acre. To Mr.and Mrs. Uzzell were born ten children nine of whom are living at thepresent. The father of these children died in 1884. He was a member ofLodge No. 27, A. F. & A. M., of Osceola, Ark.

Son Nathan was Executor and on 9 August 1808 Benjamin Herring choseBenjamin Waters as his guardian, Nancy chose her brother Nathan as herguardian 10 May 1808.. they would be about 14 years of age to be able tochoose their guardian.

Uzzell Herring is listed on the Duplin Co. web page as serving in theRev. War.

20. Jacob Herring

Uzzell Herring, his brother brought his will to court in Feb. 1797 WayneCo., or Sampson NC and was approved as Executor.
Info from James Grimwood was not clear.

25. Joshua Herring

Executor of his will was Edward Gavin, but no will was found but someestate papers are available.

26. Elisha Uzzell

According to a paper published in Olde Dobbs Trail, July-August issue1994 and written by Betty F. Cox of Madisonville, KY , there are so manyElisha's that it is hard to separate them.

Elisha who was born 1787 and married Tabitha Boone and moved to FranklinCo. NC has long been thought to be the son of Elisha, son of Thomas, buthe would not have been old enough to be helping his father who died 1798(will probated) with surveying land which is mentioned in several WayneCo. deeds and also be the Elisha Jr. listed in the 1790 census. TheElisha who married Tabitha Boone (she was born 1797) and first child born1817 and the other Elisha was already witnessing court records etc. whenthe other was only a small child.

The was also an Elisha in Maury Co. KY but by a deed listed in his notes,it is proven he is the son of Thomas, son of James in Isle of Wight Co.VA. This Elisha was in Maury Co. by 1817 tax list and married Ann Cohea.(Betty did not have access to this deed but did come to same conclusionthat he was from the ones who stayed in Isle of Wight Co., VA)

Betty is comparing the writing and signature of these various ElishaUzzell's as well as other items to point her in right direction, sinceshe has not found a certain document to say that the Elisha in MuhlenburgCo. KY is the son of Elisha from Wayne Co., NC. The names of his childrenare similar or same as the other Uzzell children, and many of the samesurnames in Wayne Co. are in Muhlenburg Co. also.

Elisha's son Elisha B. went to MO about the same time Bennett B. (son ofIsom/Isham) went there and Isom followed in a few years.

Elisha of Muhlenburg Co. was married to a woman named Chelly according toa 1819 deed. Chelly Uzzell died 24 May 1843 according to minutes ofConcord Baptist Church. By census Elisha was born about 1765.

A Chelly Uzzell is listed as a member of Unity Church in the 1815membership roll, given in Rothert's History of Unity Church, also a NancyUzzell is listed. This could be the daughter of Elisha, who was born1791(first daughter?) and did not marry until 1815, giving her time to beon this roll. It is given in the book by W.L. Winebarger that Elisha wasfirst married to Nancy, but have seen no proof.

A Hardy Hines who enlisted in Rev. War in 1776 and received pension inMuhlenburg Co., in 1818. He died in 1832 in Posy Co. IN. Elisha signedthe application saying he had known Hardy a number of years and it wouldhave had to be in NC.

In Deed Book 12 of Wayne Co. Deeds Lewis Jernigan made a deed to ElishaUzzell a resident of KY for land in TN which was given to his fatherGarner Jernigan for his service in Rev. War. It was witnessed by MajorUzzell son of Elisha Sr. and dated 14 April, 1823. At this time Elisha ofMuhlenburg Co. was the only Elisha Uzzell in KY.

On Feb. 17 1824 Elisha sold his personal estate to Calvin Uzzell (son),witnessed by Chelly Moore and John W. Uzzell and after that no otherrecords are found for Elisha. Chelly Uzzell appears on Hopkins Co. Kycensus in 1830.

I have the complete write up by Betty Cox which she sent me, excludingthe Lewis Jernigan deed and signatures which she mentions but may nothave been published in the quarterly.

Betty also mentions that Elisha was a farmer, court clerk and Sheriff ofOf Muhlenburg Co. in 1817.

On line from www.copies1918.net is an indenture made by Elisha Uzzell inMuhlenburg Co. KY, document #262.

30. Major Uzzell

This is apparently the Major Uzzell who is listed on the 1816 Greene Co.Tax List as his son Major is not old enough, but son did live in Greenein the 1850 census.
He is listed in Capt. B. Sheppard's Dist. with 526 acres with value of$900, not white of black polls listed. Could Rebecca have inherited theland from her father?

Rebecca Kilpatrick Dunn

"Her home in Wayne Co. is known as "Granny Becky's Home" is the oldesthome in Wayne Co., built around 1795-1799 and has been preserved by hergreat grandson James Uzzell." by William Edward Uzzell May 20, 1982.

1850-1870 census of Wayne Co. shows Matthew with his mother.

From the GOLDSBORO MESSENGER 9 May 1878 (Thursday) died in New HopeTownship, Mrs. Rebecca Uzzell. Her maiden name was Dunn, died Mondaylast. Until one month of her death, Mrs. Uzzell led an active life, keeping house for herself and attending her domestic affairs. Mother of13 including the late Thomas and Joshua.

110. Lewis Uzzell

Lewis Uzzell was still in Wayne Co. NC on census of 1860 age 51, schoolteacher.

117. Matthew Uzzell

He was evidently not married as his land is divided between his siblings,Joshua (deceased) Major, Elisha (deceased) John M.; Lewis; Thomas,(deceased) Lucretia Edwards; Sallie Best (deceased); Rebecca McDaniel;and Polly Williams (deceased). dated 26 April 1878. It is possible thisdeath date is not correct.

Susanna Polly Tull

From the John Heritage Bryan collection PC6 NC Archives Box 6.17 Misc.Estate Papers, folder 2
Partial will of William Tull of Lenoir Co.

I lend to my daughter Susannah Tull on Negro girl named Dina and herincrease for life then to my 3 grandchildren, William, Susan and JamesUzzell dated 13 Sept. 1822

Other side says(a part copy of William Tulls will) Susannah was wife ofJames Uzzell at time of death of William Tull and Susannah and Jos.(Joseph?) Herring Administrators upon death of James Uzzell.

Allen Groves

Allen Groves is not listed in the Sumner Co., TN 1830 census but islisted in the 1816 Taxable property and Polls as having 150 acres inBarren's District. He is also listed in 1821 with the same acres andDistrict.

39. Zilpha Uzzell

Now I want to mention to you the SIMMONS/LEMMONS family. I found ZilphaSIMMONS in the census, as you had alerted me. But the SumnerCounty,Tennessee, court records are clear that the name was renderedLEMMONS(perhaps as a result of confusion by the clerk) in earlier days.In the legal case of John Peyton, Sr. v. Ambrose L. Bennett (#6853 in theSumner County Loose Records, dated 1824), Thomas LEMMONS is identified byprocess of elimination at the husband of Zylpha UZZELL, d/oIsham/Isom/Isum UZZELL.
The children of Isom UZZELL received slaves from their father in adivision and allotment of these slaves in the court judgment (in late1816) that they were the true heirs of their great grandfather WilliamMcKinne (Sumner Co. Inventories, Settlements & Guardian Accounts, Vol."A," March 1808 - Feb.
1821). Those actually named in the division and allotment were, ofcourse, the UZZELL son Bennett and the three husbands of the threedaughters.

From the 1816 listing of property owners from the Sumner Co. web site, Ifind that the LEMMONS men shown with land at that date were William (2parcels) and John. However, in the 1820 census, which unfortunately isalphabetical by surname instead of in the order recorded, there are twoinstances of a
Thomas SIMMONS. I wish there were more records available, and I wish wehad a descendant identified who could help straighten this mess out!! Doyou have any indication that your Nathaniel RICE, later "joined" inHuntsville by John F. Peery (son-in-law of Bennett Uzzell), wasaccompanied by others
connected with the UZZELL family? The third daughter was married toAllen GROVES, but I think he might have died in Tenn. or Ky.
