4. Thomas Uzzell , Jr.

1715-1784

[Due to loss of records in Dobbs County, NC some of the informationappears to be oral tradition only and some has been proven incorrect bythe little information there is available. This has been included foryour information only]

Thomas birth date is just a guess. His oldest son Elisha served in Rev.War and applied for pension. His birth date is said to be 1736, so hisfather's was calculated from that.

From the book received on interlibrary loan from Texas State Library inMay 1998, Uzzell Ancestry by Minter Uzzell, 1977 and 2nd Edition in 1978,the better part of the Uzzell history was taken.(Much other research onthe family has been done, 2002)

This book said that Thomas lived first in Bertie Co. NC after coming fromIsle of Wight Co. VA, before coming on to Dobbs. His plantation in Bertiewas called "Nature's Beauty". The Herring, West and Braswell families allmade this same migration from Isle of Wight to Bertie to Dobbs. Thesurname Joyner is also found in first and last areas.

From the Home Page of Family Tree Maker Online "Thomas "The Huguenot"Uzzell" by Charles M. Uzzell, gives that Thomas, Jr.'s wife is CatherineArtmore quoted from William Edward Uzzell May 20, 1982. Other sources (nodetails) think she may have been a Parr. This page was accessed 10 June1998.
Thomas Uzzle of St. Louis says in one place she is Mary Catherine Parrand in another that she is "possibly" a Parr. Other sources say thatThomas father married Sarah Artimore.

From Wayne Co. Heritage Book comes the information that Thomas firstbought land in Dobbs, near La Grange recorded in Book 3 page 75 betweenWalnut Creek and Bear Creek and that his home place was across the creekfrom "Old Bear Creek Meeting House." This would be (from Old DobbsGrantee Index) between April 1754 and April 1755 and is listed he boughtthis land from John Rouse.

On the cover of the book "Guide to Research Materials In The NC StateArchives" 1997 is a partial copy of a land deed for Thomas Uzzell ofDobbs and Isaac Screvin. Know ye that I, Isaac Screvin of the Provinceand county aforesaid, cooper, for and in consideration of sum of 20pounds proclamation money to me in hand paid by Thomas Uzzell of sameCounty and province, planter, Rec., I do acknowledge fully satisfied. Isell to him his heirs and assigns forever a certain parcel of landsituated in Dobbs on the east side of Bear Creek, 100 acres more or less, same part of said land was granted by patent date 28 April 1760, theother part the sd. Isaac Screvin purchased of Richard Caswell, formerlybelonging to Thomas Jones. In the deed he signed to Richard Bush of thisbond to Joseph Williams and John Oxley Harrison and bounded as follows..No date was given but is Book 9 page 92. This book was used from April1771 to April 1773.

It is given in the book "Wayne County Heritage" that some land recordsfor Thomas are in Dobbs County file #316, Book 13 page 58 Other recordsare in files #1278, 435 and 165.

These Grants were made to Thomas Uzzell of Dobbs, NC
#399 200 acres October 30, 1765 on Bear Creek
#432 640 September 25, 1766 on Bear Creek
#432 150 November 15, 1762 on Bear Creek
#432 200 April 12, 1761 west side of Neuse River
#120 200 April 6, 1765 west side of Bone Creek
#962 41 January 6, 1793 North of Bucklesberry

The author of Uzzell Ancestry, Minter Uzzell 1909-1983 says or thinksthese were for some kind of service to the King but I don't think he isfamiliar with NC Land Grant laws. This was actually the same as buyingland from the King or anyone else. This land was not given to him as agrant sometimes implies. (R.P)

3 April 1770 Isaac Scriven, cooper sold to Thomas Uzzell 200 acres, moreor less for 20 pounds, land on east side of Bear Creek part of which wasgranted to Scriven 28 April 1768 and the other part was some he purchasedfrom Richard Caswell. Dobbs Co. NC (later in part named Lenoir)

21 January 1771 Isaac Scriven sold to Thomas Uzzell, tavern keeperanother 200 acres for 15 pounds on east side of Bear creek and upper sideof Muddy Branch being part of the same grant in 1768 as cited above andland bought of Caswell.

Living near these Uzzell's 1790 are a Joshua Hines, Peter Hines, HardyHines. The only Hines living in Lenoir near the Uzzells in 1800 are anIsaac Hines and Prudence Hines.

It is mentioned in the UZZELL ANCESTRY that Sarah's father is not knownbut her mother is Jeste Trautwine. This may be the modern spelling butthe census and deed records of Dobbs have a similar spelling: Totwine, and there are three living near Thomas Uzzell and Isam Uzzell. One SimonTotwine lives next to Isham with only 1 M +16 and 1 female and the otherSimon lives near Thomas with 2 male +16 and 1 female. There is also anIsaac Totwine living not far from Isham, with only 1 M +16..

There is a reference to Thomas Uzzells mill swamp in deed of WilliamWhitfield dated 1 Jan 1784.

Some of these witnesses and land owners named Thomas Uzzell may thebrother of Elisha, not his father.(In fact all may be)

Thomas Uzzell witnessed deed from Elisha Uzzell to Ephraim Cotton 1 March1786 that was land Elisha Uzzell bought from Ephraim Cotton in 1779

Joseph Green of Wayne Co. deed to Ephraim Cotton of same 22 Feb. 1790 for7,000 pounds of pork a 250 acre plantation lying between Walnut Creek andBear Creek on both sides of the road leading from Dobbs Courthouse toThomas Uzzell's adj. Elisha Uzzell and John Hanks, as by a patent to saidJoseph
Green dated July 21, 1774. Wit: William Burn, Major Uzzell, BarnaCotton.

Thomas Uzzell was granted land in September 1754 between Bear Creek andWalnut Creek (in present day Lenoir) with surveyor Richard Caswell andElisha Uzzell was chain bearer.

Thomas Uzzell, one of "French Thomas" Uzzell's five children, moved toNorth Carolina from Isle of Wight County, Virginia about 1754. Some sayhe emigrated about 1740, settling near La Grange. The Old Grantee Indexfor Johnston County, N.C. shows he was certainly here by 1754. The first"Thomas Uzzell from John Rouse, Book 3, p. 75 " begins a long acquisitionof large land holdings. He is dubbed "Nature's Beauty" Thomas after hishome he named "Nature's Beauty". The exact location of "Nature's Beauty"is debatable. Some say it was located on Bear Creek, others say it wason Walnut Creek. Most of the acquisitions of land lay along the presentday Wayne-Lenoir County line between Bear Creek and Walnut Creek. From1754 to 1795 the total holdings recorded by "Nature's Beauty" Thomas, hissons and grandsons totaled 4,285 acres.

Bob Johnson, writing a series of articles on Wayne County's history from1700 to 1900, as part of the American Revolution Bicentennial wrote (Sun,Sept. 21} Goldsboro News - Argus): "Judge Frank Daniels' History of WayneCounty identifies Thomas Uzzell as a large land and slave owner. TheUzzells, along with the Whitfields who arrived in this area about thesame time, are believed to have been among the wealthiest early settlers."

"Nature's Beauty" Thomas was married twice. The tombstone of hisdaughter, Zilpha, at Kenansville, N.C. bears this inscription: In memoryof Zilpha Uzzell Pearsall, wife of James Pearsall , Sr., and daughter ofThomas Uzzell and wife Catherine." No dates. By his wife Catherine hehad Elisha and Thomas III afterwards known as "Revolutionary Tom" orBucklesberry Thomas. Tradition mentions Ben, as his oldest son, andJames, but there is no authentic record of either.

The second wife of "Nature's Beauty" Thomas was Sarah Hines. She wasfirst married to a Herring and then to Thomas Uzzell about 1762 or 1764.Interestingly enough, this is the first Uzzell wife whose maiden name isrecorded. It wasn't until later that wives were ever referred to otherthan "loving wife and mother" in wills.

Through this second marriage to Sarah came some colorful familyfolklore. Thomas and Sarah had three children, Isom (also spelled Ishamand Isum) and twin girls Nancy and Susannah.

Isham loved horse racing. He is said to have had a race track "down bythe old Kornegay place." He was also known as a "dirty wrestler". Hesupposedly got so carried away once, he bit off the ear of an opponent.Tradition has it, Isham set out West by horseback. He attempted to crossthe Mississippi River. He didn't make it, but his horse came back, saddle and all, to North Carolina.

"French Thomas" Uzzell, the Huguenot, will probated in Isle of WightCounty, Virginia, in 1751 mentions his children: James, Elizabeth, Mary,Martha, and Thomas Uzzell. As was the custom then, James stayed on hisfather's plantation and Thomas (the North Carolina Uzzell's ancestor),the younger brother moved on.

"Nature's Beauty" Thomas Uzzell's descendants still live on, plant andlove the land of their forefathers. Though the wars and depressions havetaken their toll, some still have managed to hold on to some of theoriginal land grants. - Written by Lib Uzzell Griffin for "The Heritageof Wayne County North Carolina " dated 1982. 11. Thomas Uzzell

1742-
The write up on Uzzell's from Wayne Co. NC Heritage/History gives hisname as Revolutionary Tom and Bucklesberry Thomas. (There is aBucklesberry Swamp in Lenoir and may be where the name comes from)

1790 census of Dobbs gives 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16 and 2 females.
He has two slaves in this census.

The 1800 census for Lenoir gives 2 males under 10, 1 male between 16-26and 1 male 26-45 and 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-45 and 1 female over45 and 6 slaves.

The 1810 census for Lenoir has 2 males 16-26 and 1 male over 45 with 1female over 45, and 6 slaves

The 1820 Lenoir Co. census shows Thomas Sr. is over 45 with wife over 45and 8 slaves.

Also shows a Thomas Jr. with 1 male under 10 and himself 26-45 and 3females under 10 and wife 16-26 with 4 female slaves. This is evidentlythe Thomas who had the entries in Hardy Sutton Bible and died soonafter.(see 1830 census below)

In the Hardy Sutton (1803-1861) and wife(one source called her Nancy(Russell King) Annie Hill (1807-1887) Bible Record there are the entriesof Elisha Uzzell born 21 May 1814; Elizabeth Uzzell daughter of Thomasborn 19 March 1816; Winnifred Uzzell born 7 April 1818; Leah Uzzell born27 January 1820 and John Gray Uzzell born 28 September 1821; Thomas died11 February 1828, age 42 years 3 months and 26 days; John Gray died 7October 1830; Elisha died18 March 1832. The only one with Thomas asfather listed was Elizabeth but it would appear the other 3 Uzzellslisted were his as well.

Martha Marble said that the 1830 census showed Thomas as an old man, near80, and these same children (apparently) were with him (ages matched) butI have not seen it

In 1810 there is a James Uzzell living in Lenoir with 2 males under 10,and himself 26-45 and 1 female 10-16 and 1 female 26-45 with 7 slaves. Is this the son of this Thomas? He fits the right age at census to beoldest son and born about 1784.

The Heritage of Wayne Co., NC gives that this Thomas seemed to have Toryleanings and not sure which side he was on but did fight in theRevolution. It gives the he was a very large man and weighed about 325pounds but the same is also said for Tom, son of Major. (If this is oraltradition, son of Major would be the most remembered person)

DAR records give that Thomas Uzzell born 12-6 1740 VA and died 6-10-1818married 1 Mary Parr and 2 to Polly James but that he served as a soldierPS (?) in NC (I thought this Thomas stayed in VA) I believe thedescendants have mixed the two Thomas Uzzells. Minter says in his book, one of them married Polly Uzzell daughter of Elisha but this one is tooyoung, as this Thomas (one in NC) is brother to Elisha. May be the one ofthe Bible Record included with Hardy Sutton Bible.

I also received from the NC Archives a pay voucher:
NC Newbern District #2030 this may certify that agreeable to an Acct ofAssembly in Year 1781 Thomas Uzzell of Wayne Co. is allowed in specie, the sum of eleven pounds five shilling for Militia Duty dated this 12thday of Dec. 1783
James Coor and John Hawks Dift. Audit and Thomas Coor Clerk
Principal Sum is 11 pounds 5 shilling with 13 shilling 6 pence interestsigned by Robert White and T. Gatlin
From Hillsborough Treasury Office 1785
Thomas Uzzell is # 42 on the list with the 11 pounds 5 shilling amount.Robert White Esq. is listed as Sheriff of Dobbs Co.

On Ancestry.com a search on Thomas Uzzell turned up a record from the Warof 1812. It would not be this Thomas but perhaps his son? He was listedin Capt. Cox Company of NC Militia (Roll/Box 213, Roll-exct 602) as aCorporal.

A James Uzzell was listed in the 2nd Regiment 5th Company Lenoir Co. NCas a 2nd Sgt. The on line source shows the papers or records belonged toor were made by a James Cox. This was on NC Gen Web page.
HARDY SUTTON BIBLE
Transcribed from the original by William E. (Mickey) Elmore in 1974. Theoriginal Bible was in the possession of Clellon Sutton until his death in1999. I have a copy of the Bible, but it is almost not readable so weappreciate Mickey providing a copy of his transcript with permission toplace on the Lenoir County Gen Web sites. The entries in the Bible weremade by several different people as the handwriting was very different.

Just looked at the 1820 and 1830 Census - Thomas Sr & Jr in 1820 - ThomasJr consistent with the children in the Bible. He was not there in 1830 -consistent with the death date of a Thomas in the Bible no surname given.
The children with Thomas Sr who was a OLD man are consistent with thechildren of Thomas Jr. Mickey said in his article on Hardy Sutton in theHeritage Book that Nancy, daughter of Hardy Sutton was said to havemarried
a Uzzell in the family but her last name was Wooten in her father's will.I don't see a John Gray Uzzell in the 1850 Census - not checked the 1860.This Bible appears to have stayed in the Sutton family and not moved intoone of the girls.

Mickey does not know where Anna Hill came from but possibly Beaufort Co.I don't see her in the Lenoir Co Hills.

Going to make an assumption that all the people without a last name wereslaves. On the other hand, they are almost more consistent with whitebirths - every 2 years.

The old Thomas Uzzell in Lenoir was a very old man. Between 70 and 80 asI recall in the 1830 Census according to Russell.

Thomas Uzzel in Lenoir Co., NC census page 303 shows to be between 70-80years old. There are 2 females in home which am not sure who they are.(maybe his wife and daughter) One is 40-50 and the other 50-60. There is amale 5-10, 2 males 15-20 and 2 females 5-10. These appear they could bethe children of a Thomas Uzzell who is mentioned in the Bible of HardySutton and Annie Hill with some Mozingo children.(above) The youngerfemale in the census may be the children's mother?

Unknown

This wife could be the Mary/Polly Uzzell daughter of Elisha, Sr. MinterUzzell said in his book it was a Thomas Uzzell she married but understoodit to be the Thomas who I found married Mary (Polly) Dugger. This onewould be 1st cousin though and the other a bit more removed, but this oneis in right area.

Sarah Hines

In the Dobbs Grantor Index available there are a few exchanges betweenHines and Herring's Robert Hines sells to/buys from Anthony Herring inBook 1 (1746-1750) page 103 and William Hines buys from or sells toAnthony Herring again from Book 3 (April 1754-April 1755) on page 242. Ihave copied all the Herrings down so these are the only two transactionsbetween the two names.
