Ruben spent 20 yr's in the Army but there is no record of his ever drawing a pension. He settled south of Ft.Jessup and patented land. Family rumor says he married a Choctaw Indian. White women were far between in 1825 in La. Ruben moved around in the Army & may have married in some other area. The Bible came to me from Leo Oxley whose father was Francis Major Oxley and his mom was Emma Salter. Ruben could not write and I think the hand writing too be either that of his daughter, Lethey or Emma Salter Oxley. There is some writing in the front of the Bible by Emma. That is why I think the Bible may have been hers. Too the best we can find, Lethey never married & the info may have came from her. I think he may well have been "illegitimate". He was described in his Army record as slender & dark - 5'7". My GGF, Francis Major Oxley shows up in 1860 in his house. Ruben died in 1865. I think my Francis may also have been IILEG! as I think he was the son of one of Ruben's daughters as in 1850 census no wife is shown in Ruben's house. He may well have married again and had Frances. Frances children all looked "Indian" & my GM, who was one of Francis children said we had Indian blood & she looked the part.
