The Migration Project is compiled information from
members of the Dobbs, Greene, and Lenoir County ROOTS L Lists.
COWARD - Dobbs to Barnwell County, SC - many of the
children of Needham and Phebe Coward's - Needham, Isaac Hardy -
they moved out from there to La., Miss, and Texas - Needham M.
Coward died in Amite Co, Ms. Another source - According to other
information I have, Needham Coward died in 1818 in Barnwell
County, SC. His 2nd wife Mary and several of his children went to
Mississippi by wagon train.
COWARD have every reason to believe that Needham M.
Coward 1790 - 1869, who died in Mississippi, was the son of
Needham M. Coward who died in 1818 in Barnwell County, SC.
Lloyd EDWARD
ATKINSON FAMILY - Samuel and his wife Siny (Sina).
moved from Lenoir to Darlington
WOODHAM, ALEXANDER - Edward WOODHAM was married abt
1763 in Dobbs Co, NC. I do not know exactly when he and his family
moved to Darlington Co. His daughter Mary married John
ALEXANDER.
From Rose - Edward Sr and Jr Woodham moved. I also have
the WOODHAM family migrating from 'old' Dobbs Co. to Darlington
District and Sumter County, SC (present day Lee County, SC) in
late 1700's.
SKINNER, WOODHAM, BELK - Edward SKINNER was born in
Dobbs Co abt 1774. He came to Darlington Co with his parents
Benjamin SKINNER and Priscilla WOODHAM. Edward married Anna Nancy
BELK, daughter of William BELK and Hannah DARLING.
[SKINNER-WOODHAM MARRIAGE NEEDS TO BE VERIFIED]
FIELDS/COTTON - John FIELDS was born abt 1784 in Dobbs
Co. He married Elizabeth MIXON in Darlington Co. Two of their
children married two children of Abner ALEXANDER and Masse BELK.
Also Bartholomew Fields went to Darlington Co but died in Dale
County, Alabama. According to Bartholomew's Pension Application,
his mother was a Cotton and Jonathan Cotton who was also in
Darlington County may have been a cousin. It is thought, but not
proven that Bartholomew and John were sons of Brittle Fields of
Dobbs County by his first wife, a Cotton.
BELK - I do not know where William BELK came to the
area from. I suspect possibly Dobbs Co. There was a William BELK
and an Edward WOODHAM on 1781 Dobbs Co militia list. William is
the ancestor of the BELKs listed above.
ALEXANDER/WIGGINS/WOODHAM - Two widows with small
children arrived in the Darlington Co area in the late 1700's. One
was Frances ALEXANDER, ancestor of the ALEXANDERs above. The other
was Mary WIGGINS. It is believed that Mary was born a WOODHAM,
sister to the Edward WOODHAM above. It is possible that these two
widows were from the Dobbs Co area, especially if Mary WIGGINS was
actually a sister of Edward WOODHAM.
LOTS OF SPECULATION ABOUT THE IDENTITY OF MARY
WIGGINS...PROBABLY RELATED TO WOODHAMS, BUT UNPROVEN]
The above from Darlington list member - Larry Noah
MCNEESE - Darlington - The McNeese family intermarried
with the Parrott family of Lenoir Co and went to Darlington - the
McNeese family may have lived in Greene Co.
BARWICK - Around 1790 William Barwick, Sr. moved with
his son to the Cheraw District (later Darlington County), South
Carolina. The 1790 census shows both William
Barwick, Jr. and William Barwick as residents of the District.
The Barwicks were from the Lenoir C. area
REDDICK - John bc 1800 and Sarah Reddick of Greene Co
to Darlington - also Cullen and Laney Reddick bc 1818 from Greene
Co to Darlington
MOZINGO - William Mazongo - bc 1775 - from Greene to
Darlington - his wife was Nancy - bc 1780 - probably also born in
Greene County
BIRD - Hannah Bird - bc 1805 - born in NC - was she
from Lenoir Co - to Darlington Co
BEST - Benjamin Best - bc 1850 from Wayne Co to
Darlington Co
Noted that Benjamin Best migrated from Wayne Co, NC to
Darlington Co SC. I have no knowledge of that, but I found in the
Darlington Co, SC archives that a son of Benjamin Best, and one of
my ancestors, Williams Best, died there.
Kinchen R. Best, a son of Williams Best, married Elizabeth
Hanks, a daughter of Nathan Hanks, who was a sheriff of Darlington
Co, SC. Kinchen R. Best migrated to Pickens Co, AL after his
father died.
HARRELL/ BIZZELL - John Harrell and Bennett Bizzell
went to Darlington Co according to John Andrews
