Lassiter Famiy

Notes

1. Jacob Lassiter

I am not sure all of this belongs with this particular Jacob Lassiter. There is a great deal of confusion in my mind concerning him. I am tryingto sort out all these Jacob's.

In the Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolutionthere is listed a Josiah Lassiter Private in Hoggs Company, died 15September 1778.

There is Jethro, Jacob, Josiah, James, Luke, Elijah, Jesse, Jonas, andThomas Lassiter/Lasiter listed in this book.

There is a Jacob Lassiter listed in Bertie Co. NC on the tax list for1757.

On an entry form to LDS for Jacob Lassiter wife Ann Hooker withinformation of children on Family Group sheet, one source given was aBible Record belonging to Brainard Hooker of West Lafayette, IN. In 1998I found out that Brainard had written a book " William Hooker , TheEmigrant, 16?? -____"

I ordered Jacob's Rev. War service information but National Archives doesnot have it. All that is available is from NC Archives.

The DAR records show that Jacob's wife was Sarah Harrell. She may havebeen his wife but they have no proof of it. The earliest one shown inbook is such a low number that it is possible no proof is given. I havean application made in 1919 and it only gives her name as Sarah. The nextone does not show proof but has her listed as Sarah Harrell. The DARNational office has nothing in the files for this proof.

To quote from a present day DAR official," The numbers lower than 400,000can not be trusted to have correct information, as no sources wererequired." But the other numbers can not be trusted on the same Rev. WarSoldier as they continue to build upon what has gone before. Everyapplication is not researched from point 1. At least for a long time theywern't. I hear they are getting more strict.

In the 1780 Dobbs Tax List Jacob is given in Granger District, the southwest part of now Greene Co. with value of $10,455.

Appearing in the 1790 census of Dobbs are:
Jesse Lassiter 1 male over 16, 2 females, 2 free persons and 7 slaves
Jacob Sr. 2 males over 16 and 20 slaves
Jacob Jr. 1 male over 16, 1 female over 16 and 4 slaves
Nathan has 2 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 4 females and 14 slaves.

Book 1 Dobbs County Land Grants 6 January 1778 Jacob Lassiter was granted200 acres on North side of Wheat Swamp, South side of Great Contentneyand the Rainbow near Marsh Branch, joining George Bell and Joshua Miller.
On above date he was also granted 100 acres on north side of Neuse Riverand Wheat Swamp, joining Miller, McClendon and Bright lines.

Jacob's grants are in present day Greene County.

Jacob first appears in Old Dobbs Grantee Index Book 10 1773-1775 and1777-1779 so if none of the deeds were extra long or very short thenJacob bought land from Joshua Miller and wife (page 355) in mid to late1777, before the land grant in Jan. and Feb. of 1778.

In a statement given in DAR application #149714 " Jacob Lassiter, theRev. War soldier is buried on his plantation in Greene Co. NC". AnotherDAR application says Jacob was a resident of Bertie Co. during the Rev.If so, then he probably wouldn't have a plantation in Greene Co. You cansee the inconsistencies.

There are 4 pay vouchers for the name Jacob Lassiter. These are from theoriginals in the NC Archives files and are copied front and back.

10th Regiment commanded by Abraham Sheppard was created in 1777,organized at Kinston. By October they got to Halifax, leaving 47 menbehind, too sick to march. By Feb. 1778 they were in Virginia, 118 haddeserted. They reached the Potomac in March. The Regiment was disbandedwhen the few men got to Valley Forge and the men were redistributed tothe 1st and 2nd Regiment, but by this time when Jacob Lassiter could havebeen in Fenner's Co. 2nd Regiment, he was already dead, if both reportsare to be believed.

(One application has Jacob in Fenners Co. and he was in 2nd Regiment, another says Abraham Sheppards 10th Reg. and another says AbrahamSheppard Fenners Co.)

From the book THE STORY OF KINSTON AND LENOIR COUNTY by Talmage G.Johnson and Charles R. Holloman" after Aug. 1775 Dobbs promptly raised 3companies of Minute Men. Co. A was inducted 23 Sept. 1775, Co. B wasinducted Sept. 28 1775 and Co. C was inducted 4 Oct 1775. Company C wasinducted from the area of Hookerton. Each company had 68 men and 4officers.

Uzzell Lassiters record from Dobbs Bible Records Vo. III by William L.Murphy says Jacob Lassiter, Sr. died 2 February 1814.

Thomas Uzzell Lassiters Record says Jacob's wife was Sarah. Two other DARapplications say Sarah Harrell but #149714 gives only Sarah and restSarah Harrell.

This may be the Jacob CASITER listed on the Men from Dobbs too old toserve in the Revolutionary War dated 20 Oct.1781.

Ann Hooker

From the LDS library received an entry form for this family giving thesource as a Bible Record from Brainard Hooker in West Lafayette IN. Todate I have tried to track down the lady who made entry, Brainard Hookeror some of his relatives or the Bible Record and to date of May 22, 2002have not found.

Found in NC Will Abstracts at Lamar Co. (TX) Genealogical Library a willof Godphrey Hooker of Bertie County who died after 2 April 1729 but onlymentions son Benjamin, Dau. Elizabeth and wife and Ex. Elizabeth butthere is also a will for William Hooker of Bertie County written 20 Oct1736 and proven January Court 1737 names sons William, John, James,Stephen, Nathan, and daughter Ann Lasiter and Executor is Sarah Hooker, relationship not given.
Witnesses were William and James Wynn and Benjamin Baker, Sr. & Jr.

Jacob Lasiter, Abram and Thomas Harrell were witnesses of will of WilliamDavis of Carteret County, NC (This may or may not be this Jacob or hisson)
Bet Sarah Harrell is wife of Jacob, Jr.? RP July 1998

3. Nathan Lassiter

In the DAR applications I have Nathan is listed as being born about 1763but he is first listed in the Old Dobbs Grantee Index January 1777 April1779 so in about 1778 he should be 21 to legally buy land. Of course hecould be older but not likely. (So I have placed him being born as 1757)

In the INDEX TO NC RECORDS Nathan is listed as a Lt. in Light Horse andanother listing for receiving pay. The Light Horse was a Militia Co. forNew Bern Dist. After copying Jacob's pay vouchers, Grace Wight told methere were pay vouchers for Nathan and Jesse.

Nathan is listed in Pierce's Register, Appendix page 518, appearing toreceived 3 claims. (Hard to understand, ..found on Ancestry.com)

The record later showsthat B. Sheppard and J. Glasgow did not appear to be seated.

Wednesday November 1789 NC Convention, page 43

And in the Old Dobbs Land Grants by William Murphy
On 22 October 1787 Nathan Lassiter is granted 100 acres on N. side ofGreat Contentney Creek (Greene Co)

Nathan Lassiter is listed as a NC Taxpayer in 1779 in Dobbs Co.
He is listed in the 1780 Dobbs Co., NC Tax List in what is now south westGreene Co. with value of $400.

Nathan is listed in the 1790 Dobbs Co. Census. This is only time listed. He appears to be selling out his land just before 1800 and moved.??

He is listed with another male in the 16 and over category. He has 1 maleunder 16 and 4 females and 14 slaves.

There is a Nathan Lassiter in the 1830 census of Greene County, NC and itis unclear to whom he belongs. He is clearly too young to be this sameman and DAR #149714 gives a Nathan as a son of Stephen. It is possible,he is the only older one still in area.

Nathan Lassiter is listed on the 1793 Greene Co. NC Voters Record.(Greene Co. Archives web page)

Note by FRH: Benjamin and Martha Jones Sheppard were the parents ofCatherine Sheppard who married Graves Bright, son of Simon Bright Jr. andMary Graves. Apparently Martha married a Scurlock sometime afterBenjamin died.

Is this the Nathan Lassiter mentioned in The Sentinel (New Bern, NC)paper of June 24,1831 who died at Mt. Pleasant, Lenoir Co., NC on 28th ofApril 1831?

6. Silas Lassiter

He is listed only in the 1800 census of Greene Co. NC.
He is 26-45 (born 1755-1774) with 3 Males under 10, and 1 male 10-16, 1female under 10, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 26-45.

Silas is listed on the 1793 Tax List for Glasgow County (which becameGreene)

Silas is also listed as being in the Second Regiment NC Green Co. MR(?Mounted Regiment?) from the 1812-1814 Muster Rolls.

In the Old Dobbs Land Grants by William Murphy
Book 4 #151 February 1788 Silas Lassiter granted 167 acres on Wheat Swampjoining Jesse Lassiter.

Uzzell Lassiters Ledger Record says Silas died 2 Feb. 1814
Stephen Lassiter is the only Lassiter listed in 1810 census of the 3county area of former Dobbs now Greene, Wayne and Lenoir. I do not knowwhat happened to the other census but they were probably there just thatthe Greene Co. census is missing.

In the 1816 Greene Co. Tax List in Capt. William Allen's Dist. are listedSilas Lasitter with 45 acres valued at $108 with 1 white and 2 blackpolls. This may the the son of the older Silas who died 1814. There isalso a Nancy and Hanner Lasitter listed by guardian William Holliday with278 acres valued at $417.00. It is possible these are his Silas'daughters. His wife may have been a Holliday.

By the amount of persons listed in his 1800 census Terrese Lasitter givenon the Greene Co. 1820 census may be his wife. The only other femalelisted is Elizabeth. (Jesse and Nathan have apparently moved so these twowives are presumed to be Jacob's and Silas') It is not known for surewhich is which at the moment. Terrese has 1 male between 10-16, 1 male16-26, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16 and she is over 45. She mayhave 5 slaves or a total of 5 persons, it's not clear.

Treasea Lasitter is listed in Capt. William Hooker's Dist of Greene Co.Tax List with 327 acres valued at $654 and 5 black polls.
Elizabeth is listed with 235 acres with value of $470.00 and 3 blackpolls. This Elizabeth may be the mother of Silas above with the 45acres???

Elizabeth Lassiter has 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26 and 2females over 45 with the same last # of 5.

In 1830 Greene Co. census Elizabeth is gone but Teresea Lassitter isstill there with 1 male 20-30 1 female 15-20 and she is 60-70 years old.
Next to her is Nathan with 3 males under 5 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30 and1 male 30-40 (Nathan?) and 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 30-40.
Raleigh is listed with himself 20-30 and and a wife 15-20.

In 1840 Penelope Lassiter is listed and Nathan and Raleigh are not butfrom the number of people she has, it appears she is not wife of eitherso do not know who she is, unless one of the earlier daughters, notmarried. She is probably the one age 50-60 listed with 1 male 10-15, 1female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 30-40. None ofthe above listed are there in 1850.

The only ones are Stephen's children and grandchildren, except for aLemuel G Lasitter age 25 with wife Treacy age 20, Josephine age 3 andNathan B. age 5/12.

Silas is listed on the Greene Co. NC 1793 Voters Records on Greene Co.Archives web page. Listed as Silus Lassiter #378.

North Carolina Gazette published in New Bern list this for 14 Feb. 1795

7. (Sarah) Sally Lassiter

Sallie/Sarah Lassiter

born about 1765
2 DAR applications says she married Hymerick Hooker

Octavious Hooker, son of Nathan Hooker (who is son of Hymerick andSallie) says she is 1st wife of Hymerick Hooker in his Bible Records.

DAR #622567 gives this information on Hymerick Hooker, born about 1760(he would have to have been born as early as 1753 to be at least 16 in1769) and died at Greene Co. NC after 1820. Hymerick and Sally had MaryHooker born about 1793 in Greene Co. NC and she died in Monroe Co. AL.married Rev. John Rogers Thomas who was born 20 Sept 1787 at EdgecombeCo. NC. His will probated on Feb. 1826 Edgecombe Co. They were married1814 according to "Marriages of Edgecombe Co. NC 1733-1868" by Ruth SmithWilliams and Margarette Glean Griffin "Mary Hooker daughter of HymerickHooker of Greene Co. (Page 285)". They had a son Nathan Hooker Thomasborn 3 May 1824 at Edgecombe Co. who married Emeline Agee in Monroe Co.AL about 1836 but he died in Jacksonville FL 4 January, 1919, etc.
Sallie would have been died before 1790 as John Phillips list 2 Hookerchildren as heirs of his and his daughter Elizabeth in his will of 1792.

DAR #468082 gives same info on Hymerick and Sally but this applicant isdescended from Thomas Hooker born June 10 1779 at Dobbs Co. NC and diedafter 1840 probably in Warwick Co. IN.

He married Elizabeth Welch/Walsh born October 4 1780 who died atLinnville IN after 1850. They had a daughter Anna born May 17,1808 inGreene Co. NC, etc

IGA says she married Hymerick Hooker

DAR #149714 (lola Getchell) Thomas Uzzell Lassiters Record Book saysSallie and Hymerick had Thomas and Hymerick, Jr.

John Phillips made his will in 1792 and proven in Craven Co. NC and whenhis wife died 1807 final settlement was made. He mentioned in 1792, 2grandsons, John and William Hooker. It does not seem that he wouldmention these children if they were only step grandchildren. Someresearchers feel it would not be legal, but I think a person can leavehis estate to anyone he chooses, step children or whatever. It is justodd that he calls them "grandson".

Thomas Phillips and his sister Elizabeth Phillips Hooker are onlyPhillips children living in1807.

Elizabeth Hookers children are listed as John, William, Mary, Hymerick,Jr., Thomas and Nathan Hooker.

Hymerick first appeared in Dobbs Grantee Index 1779 so he was bornprobably before 1753 (Dobbs taxables 1769).

Hymerick, Jr. tombstone says "Son of Hymerick and Elizabeth PhillipsHooker."

By the old naming patterns, Hymerick, Jr. would be near the last of thesons. Hymerick Hooker 1790 Dobbs census: 4 males under 16, 1 male over16, 2 females.

Hymerick Hooker

In the will of John Phillips, it is said his name is spelled AHIMERLICK(from the copy of the will I have of John Phillips Hymerick Hooker is notmentioned at all, it might be in the estate papers)

On the 1780 Dobbs Co. Tax List Hymerick is listed with a value of $653.00and probably a brother William with value of $618.00 both living inGranger Dist of what is now south west Greene Co.

Hymerick is listed 1769 in North Carolina Taxpayers (Dobbs Co.) Alsolisted in 1779. There is also a William Hooker listed in both these taxperiods in Dobbs. In the 1769 Hymerick is listed with William. Hymerickwould be age 16 making him born by 1753.)

Hymerick's home built in the 1780's to replace the older one of hisfather, is still standing (1981 from Charles R. Holloman) and well keptup. The last home of old William of Greene (III) was torn down about 20years ago.
Hymerick was an officer in the Revolutionary militia and served brieflyunder Continental Command as a lieutenant in a Regiment of State Troops(not the regulars).

He also served in State House of Representatives, then called House ofCommons, several terms.
Hymerick's (Sr.) tombstone say he died December 15, 1814 in the 63rd yearof his age so that would make him born 1751. The tombstones are locatednorth of the Contentney Creek on the place where Hymerick owned about 3miles west of Hookerton, near Hooker Crossroads, on the road betweenKinston and snow Hoill. Buried there (with stones standing) is HymerickJr. , son of Hymerick and Elizabeth Hooker who departed this life in the35th year of his age on 21 July 1822.

Included is John, son of Hymerick and Elizabeth Hooker who departed thislife Sept. 11, 1811 in the 31st year of his age.

It was reported by Jane Phillips that Hymerick Sr. and Jr. and JohnHooker were buried at Four Way in Greene County, NC. Is that the name ofthe Cemetery? and their stones still there. It said that on the stone ofHymerick, Jr. he is the son of Hymerick Hooker and Elizabeth PhillipsHooker. (Charles R. Holloman leaves out the "Phillips", which is probablycorrect".)

From Charles R. Holloman's "Hooker Family of Greene Co." are given thesegrants for Hymerick. (Greene Co. was named Glasgow Co. for 2 years beforechanging)

(Sometimes an issue date and recorded date are given, when so I havegiven only the later date)

Glasgow file 116 Hymerick Hooker 640 acres book 107, page 150 issued Dec.6 1799 on s. side of Great Contentney Creek adjoining lines of MurphyDixon and Lewis Connors old patent line. (This is the land on which thetown of Hookerton was established in 1817)

In the Newbern District, Dobbs County in 1790 Hymerick Hooker is listedpage 136 and Nathan, Samuel and William all listed page 135.
William Hooker has 1 male over 16, 1 female and 11 slaves
Samuel Hooker has 1 male over 16, 7 females and 5 slaves
Nathan Hooker has 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females and 3slaves.
Hymerick Hooker has 1 male over 16, 4 males under 16 and 2 females and 5slaves in the 1790 census of Dobbs, lives 5 houses away from NathanLassiter. Heymrick Hooker is listed in the 1800 census of Greene County,NC. He does not appear in the 1810 in NC. Later material said at leastsome of this family moved to Orange Co. NC.

In Greene County census for 1800 Heymrick Hooker is listed page 602 asonly Hooker in that county. Some of the same names listed in Bertie in1790, John, Nathan, Stephen and William are in Tyrrell County in 1800 butdon't know that they are same persons. Local Historian Charles R.Holloman says that the area where Nathan, Samuel and William are in the1790 census is missing for 1800 which is the part of Greene Co. south ofContentney Creek and the Greene Co. census for 1810 is missing entirely.

The Bible Records used as the entry on IGI were in possession of aBrainard Hooker in West Lafayette, IN before 1947 when he died.

In a Hooker Bible Record it is mentioned Hymerick died in 1814.

If Hymerick married Sallie Lassiter it was either a short marriage beforeElizabeth Phillips and Sallie was older than records give or it was ashort marriage after 1807 and before 1814. This is more likely the casewith descendants thinking she was the only wife.

John Phillips will in Craven Co. NC written 6 February 1792 and provedMarch 1793 proves Hymerick was married to Elizabeth Phillips and thedescendants noted for Sally are actually not hers. He probably lived inLenoir Co. at this time but perhaps he still owned land in Craven and thewill was probated there.

He mentions his grandsons John Hooker and gives him one Negro boy namedDosey and grandson Thomas Hooker one Negro boy named Abram. These areprobably the two oldest children of Hymerick and Elizabeth, both beingborn before 1792

On 12 December 1807 final settlement was made after John Phillips wifeElizabeth died and only their daughter Elizabeth Hooker and son ThomasPhillips are living so several heirs (grandchildren) are listed.

At June term 1807 the order to settle the account came from Craven Co.,NC court. There was a balance in account of 266 pounds 18 shilling whichsum belongs to heirs including Elizabeth Hooker. Her and her children'stotal was 46 pounds 3 shilling. Her heirs were listed as John Hooker,Thomas Hooker, William Hooker, Himerick Hooker Jr., Nathan Hooker andMary Hooker.

If this Mary Hooker is the same as listed as a daughter of Hymerick andSallie, she was probably the next child after Thomas as she married in1814 in Edgecombe Co. NC.

Martha Mewborn Marble of Washington DC sent me the typed will of JohnPhillips and the settlement of estate and other information on thePhillips family in a letter dated April 17 1997 which is in my file.

In 1779 on the list of persons registered to vote in Dobbs Co. to electrepresentatives to the Hillsborough Convention where the FederalConstitution was to be submitted Nathan, James and Hymerick all listedbut Hymerick did not vote.

Heymrick Hooker is listed on the 1793 Greene Co. Voter's Records on theGreene Co. NC Archives web page.

Harvey Hooker in Aug. 1998
Hymerick was like most Hookers, energetic and imaginative. He builtHookers Great Bridge in 1795 across Great Contentney Creek at what laterbecame the town of Hookerton, NC, chartered in 1817. The Hookers builtGreene Academy in 1803 and it stood until1934 and had a high reputationbefore the public school system took over. He built and operated sawmills, grist mills, flour mills. His home built in 1780's was stillstanding in early 1980's.
Hymerick was an officer in the Revolutionary Militia and served brieflyunder Continental command as a Lt. in State Troops. Served in the NCHouse of Rep. several times before he ran for the State Senate and lostthe election.

Probably it is the sons of this Hymerick listed in the NC War of 1812 inthe 2nd Regiment 7th Company , Greene Co. Hymerick was Capt., Thomas aLt., James also listed and a William Hooper(?) was 1st Sgt.
