1. ALEXANDER1 HARPER was born circa 1725. He married Margaret Kilpatrick, daughter of Alexander Kilpatrick and

Bible. Anna Branscombe who sent me a typed copy, (2000). He died BY 1785.

The above entries indicate that Alexander had a Will and a number of outstanding requests for Land Patents. The Hooker entry
indicates a marriage between William Hooker and a daughter of Alexander although it appears they had no children based on the 1819
Law Suit.

NC STAR - Sept 24 1819 - from records of Roger Kammerer - Greene County Aug 1819 - Sarah Harper vs Francis Harper, J. Harper,
Hugh Harper, Alex Harper, Blaine Harper, Robert Harper, Caleb Spivey, James Spivey, Alexander Spivey, Jesse Hart and wife Polly,
Ephraim Spivey, Elizabeth Spivey, Elijah Johnson and wife Elizabeth, John Forkand and wife Susannah - last two couples from out of
state Francis,

William, Elizabeth Harper Johnston, and Robert are proven children of Alexander although only Elizabeth and Robert are
proven children of Margaret. It had been speculated that Margaret wife of Ephraim Spivey was also a daughter and this list of her
children can be proven from other sources.

William died between the 1816 Greene County Tax List and the 1820 Census. The above appears to be William's widow, Sarah,
requesting a dower from the estate and the heirs who would be the children of Alexander. This gives us a list of children for Alexander
and Margaret. Francis Hodges noted that most likely the sons were named in order of birth and we know that Francis was the oldest,
William one of the oldest and Robert the youngest. The girls are probably named in order also although Margaret may be younger
than Elizabeth.

MARGARET KILPATRICK. Margaret died in Dobbs County, North Carolina.
The nine known children of Alexander1 Harper and Margaret Kilpatrick were as follows:

2.

i.

FRANCIS2 HARPER was born circa 1748.

In 1803 - Francis Harper was the Admr of James Vendrick estate
John Vendrick had a daughter Ann Harper in 1785

We can't sort the first cousins with proof but we are inclined to think that Francis Sr. on the 1790
Census was the son of Alexander and Francis Jr was the son of Francis I and the father of Charles and
Delaney. If this is the case, it appears that Francis, son of Alexander may not have had any sons. Could
he had married a daughter of John Vendrick? We think that this Francis may have been one of the men
over 45 in the household of Blaney Sr.

3.

ii.

WILLIAM HARPER was born between 1748 and 1753 in Craven County, North Carolina; Dobbs

County 1769 Tax List, original at NC Archives, Raleigh, NC. He died between 1816 and 1820 in
        Greene County, North Carolina.

Under Alexander on the 1769 Dobbs County Tax List was his son William indicating he was at least
16 and probably not older than 21 so his birth was 1748-1753 and probably closer to the 1753 date.

From the census, he appears to have been married but had no children that we are aware of; however,
if Sarah in the lawsuit was his widow, she has a number of children on the 1820 Census. They could
have been Williams or someone elses but there is no older lady in the household. That indicates a 2nd
wife and children born after 1800 where then were no children in the household of William.
William appears to be on the 1816 Greene Tax List - I assume he is the one in Capt Hooker's District
with 400 acres worth $800 - 8 black poles - no white. There is another William on the Tax List who is
        not identified at this time.

        MRS. ARCH J. FLANAGAN PAPERS
1 November 1786 - EVERETT HOUSE or HOMES to JOHN SUGG Junior - all of Dobbs - 200 acres
in Dobbs - SS Great Contentnea, both sides of Holmes Run - adj JOSHUA HOLMES, CAILES,
ROBERT HILL, WILLIAM HARPER, JOHN HARRELL'S line now BENJAMIN SHEPPARD,
JOSHUA HOUSE'S old patent line, now BENJAMIN SHEPPERD'S
A true copy and signed by Dallam Caswell
According to Julia, he was in the Pitt County military records as a Captain in the militia in 1779 and again in 1781.

5. JOHN2 HARPER (Alexander1) was born circa 1760. He married Ann Ormond, daughter of William Ormond and Ann Watkins,
in Greene County, North Carolina, on 28 February 1784; James Ormond Copy Book, East Carolina University, Joyner Library,
Manuscript Division. John died on 7 November 1827; Ibid.
Something is not right. I think this line is correct, but a family group sheet has this John Harper married to Sidney Ann Margaret
Ormond daughter of William (son of Thomas and Margaret).
I have his ca birth as where he was named in the courtsuit as probably the 3rd son.
John was a son of Alexander Harper. In John's will, which I have not seen, there is mention of a slave coming to him from the estate of
William Harper deceased but gave no clue as to his relationship.
John was on the 1816 Greene Co Tax List - in Capt Pope's District - 360 acres - $1020 - 8 black poles - no white indicating he was
over age. There was a Francis just below him who could have been his son Francis but that Francis also had no white poles. There was
also a John Jr probably a son of John Sr. It appears most of the men in Capt Hooker's District were descendants of Alexander I.

According to the will of William Ormond, Ann's brother, she and John Harper had nine children so four are missing.
The five known children of John2 Harper and Ann Ormond were as follows:

6. HUGHEY2 HARPER (Alexander1) was born between 1760 and 1763 in Dobbs County, North Carolina; 1830 Greene County
Census. He married Eleanor (Laney) Ward in Greene County, North Carolina. He died circa 1842 in Greene County, North Carolina;
William L. Murphy., Greene County, NC Estate Records - 1839 - 1845 (Private).

Hugh was on the 1816 Greene Tax List - Capt Hooker's District - 300 acres - $600 - three black poles - no white which might indicate
he was over age. He was also listed in behalf of the heirs of M. Patrick

Hugh received a land patent in 1785

the age of 2

The David Hartsfield Bible indicates he was married two times - once to Laney and once to Eleanor. Or maybe Laney was a nickname
for Eleanor as Francis Hodges stated.

ELEANOR (LANEY) WARD.
There is only one instance where Hugh's wife is named, and she is called Elenor. Francis Hodges says that Laney is a nickname for
Eleanor. I have seen it written that she was a Ward, but don't know the documentation.
The eight known children of Hughey2 Harper and Eleanor (Laney) Ward were as follows:

The five known children of Alexander2 Harper and Courtney Coward were as follows:

31.

i.

FRANCIS3 HARPER was born circa 1790. He married Susan Walston. He was buried in Walston

        Cemetery,, Greene County, North Carolina.
This is a wild guess. In the Walston Cemetery is an old marker for Frank Harper husband of Susan
Walston and Susan Walston Harper - no dates. There was a Francis on the Pitt Census to be the right
age to be a son of Alexander Jr.
One Francis Harper was married to Zilpha McCoy daughter of William and Cordilla McCoy.

8. MARGARET2 HARPER (Alexander1) was born circa 1768. She married Ephraim Spivey, son of Caleb Spivey, circa 1787;
Dobbs County 1790 Census.
Did she remarry a Joyner? Spivey Bible gives the death date of a Margaret Joyner in 1838.

EPHRAIM SPIVEY. Ephraim died on 20 February 1806; Alexander Spivey notebook, Present location not know, but a copy in
"Bible Records of Dobbs County, Vol 1" by William Murphy.
EPHRAIM SPIVEY is listed in the 1780 Dobbs County Tax List in Capt. Wm. ORMOND's District. His property was evaluated at
£400. He paid his taxes with 4 pecks Indian Corn. (The tax rate was 1 peck Indian Corn per £100 valuation.) ORMOND's District
was a part of present day Greene County, on the north side of the Contentnea Creek, including Ormonds and Olds
Townships. - Source 2 1780 Dobbs County Tax List

9. BLANEY2 HARPER (Alexander1) was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, circa 1770. He married Mary (Polly) Hood,
daughter of Unknown Hood. Blaney died circa 1850 in Lenoir County, North Carolina.

Still speculation. Francis Marion Harper, Jr. stated his great grandfather was Blaney Harper bc 1790. Married to Polly Hood. He also
stated his maternal grandfather was Admiral Croom son of Lott who was part of the Paletine group and that information is incorrect.
Although the family Bible gives James Madison's birthdate as 1812, his stone gives 1809 and Census records backs that date. There
appears to be no other Blaney than the son of Alexander for a candidate for this Blaney. This Blaney was right at 40 years old when
James Madison was born. If this is correct, either he was an old man when he married or he had another wife and maybe no children.

Ann, daughter of George Miller, who was married to a Harper in 1801 has not been identified.
This is the line of Francis Hodges and he is comfortable with this Blaney being the son of Alexander and Margaret.
Blaney is on the 1816 Greene Tax List - Capt Hooker's District - 150 acres - $300 - 1 white pole. He was also on for the heirs of A.
Jones.

MARY (POLLY) HOOD was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, circa 1790. Mary died in Lenoir County, North Carolina.
The two known children of Blaney2 Harper and Mary (Polly) Hood were as follows:

42.

i.

ROBIN3 HARPER was born in Greene County, North Carolina. He died in Greene County, North

Carolina; Died young according to Francis M. Harper, Jr.

+

43.

ii.

JAMES MADISON HARPER, born 14 October 1809 in Greene or Lenoir County, North Carolina;

        married Charlotte Elizabeth Parrott.

10. ROBERT2 HARPER (Alexander1) was born in Greene County, North Carolina, on 21 July 1775; Harper - Pope Family Bible.
He married Nancy (Ann) Pope, daughter of John Pope and Mary (Pope), in Greene County, North Carolina, on 16 March 1809; John
Pope Family Bible, Collins Sterotype Edition of the New Testament. (B & J Collins, New York 1816); Mrs. Betty Flake, typed copy
on the Greene County, NC Archives site.; Harper - Pope Family Bible. He died BY February 1839 in Greene County, North Carolina;
William L. Murphy, Greene County, NC Estate Records - 1839 - 1845.

Robert was on the 1816 Greene Tax List - Capt Hooker's District - 745 acres - $1118 - one white and three black poles.

ROBERT HARPER BIBLE AND LETTER - posted on the Greene County Archives by Anna Branscome.
Letter from Edward Oscar McGowan, Jr. (1887-1968) to Leta McGowan Hedgpeth (1876-1969), undated but probably written in the
1950s or early '60s. Scrawled in pencil, but still quite legible.

Dear Sister:-
Here is the family record of the Harper family you asked me to copy. I wish our ancestors, God rest their souls, had recorded deaths
and marriages it would certainly make things much clearer now. Perhaps they did record them and they have been lost or destroyed or
for all we know may be packed away in some old family trunk some where. Who knows?

To try to make the record clearer, I have given each one of the persons recorded a number.
No (1) Robert Harper son of Alexander and Margaret his wife was your great-grandfather.
No 2 is Nancy his wife her name does not appear in the records again. Ann Harper is recorded in
No 3 as being the mother of the first child. Could it be that Nancy Harper recorded in No 2 as the wife of Robert died and Robert
married Ann? If this is true then why was grandmother McGowan named "Nancy" and why did she so frequently mention the Popes as
her kinsfolk? Pope was Nancy Harper's maiden name. [Of course the solution to this problem is that Ann and Nancy are the same
person-I'm not sure why this didn't occur to my great-grandfather, seeing as how his own granddaughter was named Anne after her
mother Nancy McGowan James.]

No 4 Reading Harper, grandmother's brother (I think) was her guardian after her father's death. She often spoke of Uncle Reading or
brother Reading and one of them was her guardian. I can't remember which. It could have been either of the two.
No 6 Lourainy Harper, Marsey's older sister, is the one Aunt Emma was named for though by the time she came along the spelling had
been changed to Laurainy. Marsey sometimes called Aunt Emma Reeney, which was probably a contraction of Lourainy. ["Marsey"
was the family nickname for their grandmother, Nancy Harper McGowan, see next.]

No 7 Nancy Harper is as you know our grandmother. She was the youngest child.
The name Robert Harper appears twice on the list. No (1) her father and No 4 her brother. Our Uncle Robert was probably named for
him, as was Robert Anderson our cousin named for our Uncle Robert. [A daughter of Nancy Harper McGowan married Isaac or Ike
Anderson; their child was this cousin Robert Anderson.]

No 8 is "Peggy daughter of Dina" is almost illegible. She was born 1825 one year before Marsey.
No 9 is just one word "Charity." [Looking closely at the original, this name is "Charry" rather than "Charity".] These two entries mean
nothing to me. Could it be that these were slaves? It seems to me I have heard Marsey speak of Dina and Charity as being among the
slaves in the family. I am not sure about this. Nor did I know that family slaves were
recorded in family bibles. Only given names being recorded might indicate that they were slaves. What do you think?
Wish I could get more out of this but I am afraid it's the best I can do. Am not shure you can read all this as I can't write legibly any
more. Suppose you copy it in your neat plain handwriting.

HARPER-POPE FAMILY BIBLE

Tucked into the McGowan family diary along with a cover letter from my great-grandfather E.O. McGowan Jr. to his oldest sister Leta
McGowan Hedgpeth, the Harper-Pope family "bible" is really only one page and a fragment of another torn from the Family Records
section of a Bible. The pages are very worn and crumbled at the egdes, and the "complete" page is in fact torn across
the middle fold and taped back together at some point (probably by my great-grandfather?). The two taped sections
clearly match up. Originally the pages must have been 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 or a little smaller, with a decorative motif as a border: the motif
resembles two acanthus leaves or pilasters separated by two rows of four dots, sort of like :: :: , and there is a stylized sunburst A4 in
each corner. Each page is headed at the top with FAMILY RECORD and MARRIAGES or BIRTHS or DEATHS, with a vertical line
dividing the page into two halves. All inscriptions are in the same hand, I believe, and
written in black ink faded to brown but still clearly legible.

Page 1:
This page is numbered [677] at the top center, 86 at the bottom left, and 4R at the bottom center; all numbering is outside the motif
border.

[A line in ballpoint blue ink is drawn from this last entry and the words "My grandmother McGowan" written in-surely either by E.O.
McGowan Jr. or Leta McGowan Hedgpeth. Nancy Harper McGowan was the mother of E.O. McGowan Sr. and therefore their
grandmother.]

This is the upper left quadrant of another page, badly crumbled at the edges, torn along the horizontal fold in the middle. There's no
evidence of more writing on the page being lost in the tearing, however.

JOHN HARPER died in year --- having a will - in the 5th clause he bequeathed to daughter ANN POPE the Negros Mary and Taney --

HARPER, ANN md DAVID SCARBOROUGH by whom she had one child, IRA ?? SCARBOROUGH. MRS. SCARBOROUGH is
still in possession of the slaves. The injunction granted in this case is a special one - ANN attempted to sell in Sept 1851 - an absolute
estate in slaves, Mary, West and Ellen (latter 2 children of Mary) to EDWIN G. SPEIGHT who was fixing to move out of state. PLF
told SPEIGHT about the will and ANN denied trying to sell them; SPEIGHT decided to buy
and risk the title. ANN says her children not entitled to slaves. OWEN W. JONES married one of ANN'S daughters - JONES also
wanted slaves sold and wanted his share of money.

I wanted to send you the 1850 Chickasaw Co., Ms., Census info, and tell you that I don't think my Martha was the daughter of Orman

JOHN ELIZABETH FITZHUGH4 HARPER, born 3 October 1835 in Greene County, North Carolina;

married Rebecca Hart Phillips; married Sidney Ann (Dilly) Ormond.

26. ROSANNA (ROSEY)3 HARPER (Hughey2, Alexander1) was born between 1790 and 1800 in Greene County, North Carolina;
William L. Murphy, Greene County, NC Estate Records - 1839 - 1845.; Tarboro Press, Tarboro, North Carlina. She married William
Pope, son of John Pope and Mary (Pope), By 1825 in Greene County, North Carolina. She died BY 1841 in Greene County, North
Carolina; William L. Murphy, Greene County, NC Estate Records - 1839 - 1845.

According to Julia Moseley Combs, Rosanna's children, were remembered in her brother's will. Hugh P. Harper died in 1838. Rosey's
estate was settled on 10 May 1841 and John M. Patrick was named guardian for her three minor children - Mary E., Elizabeth and
William J. Pope.

WILLIAM POPE was born circa 1780.
I think William Pope 's first wife was named Rebekah. There is a Rebebekah Pope (born Feb. 1773 and died 6 Jan. 1828) buried in the
Charles Edwards Burial Ground in Greene County.

The 1820 Prinited Census indicates that William was much younger. It does support two wives and two sets of children. It is possible
that this is two different Williams.
If it is the same William, then the Census supports both Redding and Samuel D. being his sons. The 1820 Census indicates two sons bc
1804 - 1810.

The 1830 Census supports both a son and daughter bc 1825-1830, one male born 1800-1810, and William bc 1790-1800. Next door
was Samuel D. bc 1800 - 1810 with a young male in his household.
The three known children of Rosanna (Rosey)3 Harper and William Pope were as follows:

iii.

WILLIAM JOHN POPE, born 6 March 1830 in Greene County, North Carolina; married Emily

        Edwards.

27. HUGH P.3 HARPER (Hughey2, Alexander1) was born between 1800 and 1810; Albritton vs Sutton Supreme Court NC
Supreme Court Case #4646, NC Archives (1849). He married Gatsey Scarborough, daughter of David Scarborough, on 17 April 1828
in Greene County, North Carolina; Raleigh Register, abstracted by Lois Smathers Neal. He married Marney Joyner, daughter of John
Joyner, on 19 August 1835; Tarboro Press. He died circa 1838 in Greene County, North Carolina; Ibid.

Is this not right? Was there a Hugh Jr and a Hugh P. or were they the same person? The Raleigh Register gives Hugh Jr married to
Gatsey Scarborough and Hugh P married to Marny Joiner. To add to the speculation we are missing someone as according to the
newspaper, Hugh P.'s son Benjamin was born in 1844. On the Jury List of 1842 - Hookerton District - William H. Harper was listed
for the heirs of H. P. Harper.

Julia says that Hugh P. Harper was the son of Hughey and Elinor Ward. She also said Hugh P. had a Will and died in 1838 but I have
not seen said will.

In the Greene estate Records is the following entry
#39 - HUGHEY P. HARPER - 1 June 1839 - Account with James Albritton, administrator

#164 - BENJAMIN D. HARPER - minor of H. P. Harper - Feb 1841 - guardian was William H. Harper - received money from negro
in Miss, money from James Albritton admr

#308 - BENJAMIN D. HARPER - minor of Hughey P. Harper Feb Term 1843 - guardian W. H. Harper

#377 - Benjamin D. Harper - 22 Jan 1844 - John M. Patrick exec of estate of Wm. H. Harper former guardian - Wm. Sutton present
guardian. Received money from estate of Hughey Harper.

There were no known children of Hugh P.3 Harper and Gatsey Scarborough.

The only known child of Hugh P.3 Harper and Marney Joyner was:

BENJAMIN D.4 HARPER was born in Greene County, North Carolina. He died circa 1846 in Greene

        County, North Carolina; Ibid.
Can't find the citation from the Tarboro Press for his birth and death.

28. RACHEL3 HARPER (Hughey2, Alexander1) was born on 4 March 1804 in Greene County, North Carolina; The American
Advocate, abstracted in the NCGJ, February 87 by Katherine K. Walls
.; William L. Murphy, Greene County, NC Estate Records -
1839 - 1845
.; Collection of Julia Moseley Combs, Hampstead, NC.; Tarboro Press. She married John Pope Scarborough. She died on
26 December 1857 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 53; Collection of Julia Moseley Combs.; The American Advocate,
abstracted in the NCGJ, February 87 by Katherine K. Walls
.

According to Julia M. Combs, Rachel Harper b 1804 daughter of Hughey, married first John Pope Scarborough who died in 1824. She
later remarried William Sutton.

According to the American Advocate, she was baptised by Elder James Moore, August 1830 and was a member of the Disciples of
Christ.

JOHN POPE SCARBOROUGH was born circa 1802 in Greene County, North Carolina; Lenoir County Heritage Book. He died in
1824 in Greene County, North Carolina; Collection of Julia Moseley Combs. "Ruhi19" <Ruhi19@cox.rr.com>

SAMUEL WILLIAM4 SCARBOROUGH was born in 1824 in Greene County, North Carolina. He

married Elizabeth Parrott, daughter of Benjamin Parrott Jr. and Harriet Kennedy. He died in 1905 in
        Lenoir County, North Carolina.

WILLIAM (BILLY) SUTTON was born circa 1796 in Lenoir County, North Carolina; 1860 and 1870 Lenoir Co NC Census. He
married Hulda Isler, daughter of John B. (Gillard) Isler, circa 1820. He died circa June 1884 in Lenoir County, North Carolina; Will
of William Sutton, written 2 April 1879 probated 21 June 1884, Lenoir County.

Francis Hodges said it is well known in the family that Sarah Arendall had a granddaughter, Huldah who married Bright Kennedy.
Since this William had that daughter, it can be assumed this William was the son of Sarah.

On the 1850 census Rachel was in his household but it is fairly certain she was not the mother of all his children. Since the stone of
Noah H. states his mother was R. one can assume Rachel was the mother. Rachel's first husband did not die until 1824 so she was not
the mother of J.F.I. I originally placed Huldah as the daughter of Rachel, but that may not the case. John B. (Gillard) Isler of Jones
County had a Will written 1822 and probated in 1823 and named a daughter Huldy Sutton. The abstract of the Will is on Jim Isler's
website. John was the son of Frederick Isler. Everything fits for Huldy to be the first wife of William Sutton.
On the 1850 and 1860 Census there was a Mary Sutton in the household. Given her age, I am going to assume she was the unmarried
sister, Polly.

His marriage to Rachel is proven by her father's estate records in Greene County. His negroes were divided among his children
including Rachel Sutton wife of William Sutton. The estate settlement was on 5 January 1843.

The David Hartsfield Bibles gives her birth as 19 August 1819 although others have read it as 1809 but her first child was born in 1831

Susan (Harper); NC Supreme Court Case - heirs of Alexander Harper Pitt County, NC, abstracted by Brenda Stocks File
CR079.508.31
. He died circa October 1846 in Pitt County, North Carolina; Ibid.

There is no proof that this Alexander was the son of Alexander II but there is a little circumstantial. Both Edward and this Alexander
had land on Back Swamp in Pitt County and Edward is a proven son of Alexander II. For the time being, we are placing him here
subject to change.

I agree with you that Alexander (d.1846) and Edward were probably brothers. I have tried to find when they acquired their land, both
adj. to Nehemiah Garris in the Littlefield area of Pitt. Nehemiah Garris was deeded his land by his father John Garris in 1823 (John
Garris bought it from Joseph Jackson (pat.) in 1822). The plat of this parcel in Ronald Garris' book shows the
lower left corner abutting Alexander Harper. So Alexander Harper acquired his parcel sometime prior to 1822. I could not find any
record of that in Elisons deed abstracts or Hofmann's Patents. Edward Harper (Greene) purchased his land in 1815 from John Van
Pelt(Craven) and Jonathon Van Pelt(Craven), 302 1/2 acres for $850. Adjacent to Thomas Joiner, Samuel
Wingate, Elisha Griffin and Allen Cannon. Former owners Joseph Jackson (Pat.) and Lawry Van Pelt (from Elison). The Garris land
was bought from Joseph Jackson also, part of a patent. The South boundary of the Garris land abutted Griffin Land , and the East
boundary abutted Cannon land.So Alexander's land was probably very close to Edward's land since they both
were close to Nehemiah Garris.Nehemiah was born in 1790 in Dobbs Co. (again from Ronald Garris's book) and Edward and
Alexander probably were, too. Greene Co. line is only about 3 miles (as the crow flies) from this area of Pitt Co.

From Brenda Stocks - bstocks@coxnc.rr.com
Hi Martha,
My Harper notes are very sketchy and I really have worked very little on this line. John W. Harper was my GGGrandfather. I have a
deed from Pitt deed book PP, pg 141 that outlines the division of property of Edward Harper in 1858. Petioners were John W Harper,
Wm. W. Harper, Nancy Wetherington, Martha (Patsy) Rasberry, Alexander Harper, Margaret Harper, Albert Harper, Jonus Harper
and Catherine Harper. According to Roger's notes, Edward Harper was married to Catherine Sugg, daughter of John E.W. Sugg.
Edward Harper was identified in Two Pitt Co. Deeds (Book II, 1836) as son of Alexander Harper of Greene County. According to
1850 census, Edward was born about 1795. His father was an Alexander Harper, but I have no idea who his grandfather was.

Pitt County
Deed Book PP, p.141
Order of Court of Pleas and Quarter Session Feb. term 1856 for division of property of Edward Harper, dec'd.
Petitioners to said Court Nov. term 1857:
John W. Harper, Wm W. Harper, Nancy Weatherington wife of Gideon Weatherington, Patsy Rasberry wife of Stephen Rasberry,
Alekander Harper, Margaret Harper, Albert Harper, Jonas Harper, Catherine Harper, Tenants in Common to Five Hundred Fifty acres
of land joining N. Garris and others. Court appointed Hardee Johnson, Nehum Garris, and Jonathon MeGlohon as commissioners and
proceeded to divide the land into nine parcels. Division submitted for consideration of the Court 21 June, 1858
H. Johnson (seal)
N Garris (seal)
Johnathon MeGlohon (seal)

The plat shows parcel #1 abbutting Cabin Branch. No other location points. I have two later deeds that pinpont the location of this
property.

Martha,
I was just looking for location in the Nehmiah Garris book (by Ronald Garris). According to this book, Nehemiah Garris' father John
Garris bought 357 1/2 acres in Pitt Co in 1822 adjoining Elisha Griffin, Sally Cannon, Alexander Harper. and Cullen Lathan. About a
year after this he deeded it to Nehemiah Garris. This property was described as being in the Littlefield
area of southeastern Pitt Co.

Littlefield is just a few miles south of Ayden, east of Hwy. 11. I think St. John's Church is in that area or at least close to it. I also think
you can turn left off Hwy 11 as you are going from Ayden to Kinston at Hanrahan, and that will take you to Littlefield. It is not far
from Greene Co. I used to know all the roads around Ayden, but I'm rusty on that now after being away so many years! I think it's
interesting that in 1822 , that property was next to Alexander Harper's property. I guess Edward inherited it from his father Alexander.
Maybe that will be in the two deeds referenced in Roger's Rough notes re Alex. as Edward's father. I'll get them as soon as I can.

Lakeland, Florida.

Had another death date for him.
The Harpers seem to have had a rather well-developed political consciousness.. James Madison Harper (b. 1809) was born the same
year James Madison became US president. What this may indicate is that the Harpers were strongly pro-Federalist in their political
sympathies. Remember, the Federalist and anti-Federalist controversy was rather hearted in Dobbs County, which is what contributed
to much of the violence that lead to the division of Dobbs into Lenoir and Greene in 1791. "Francis Marion" is also a political name,
as is "Zebulon Vance." And I have also seen a "Preston Brooks Harper" (b. 1858) listed in some of the Harper Bible records which
you posted. (In case you have forgotten, Preston Brooks was the congressman from South Carolina who in 1858 took his cane and
severely beat Charles Sumner, the abolitionist senator from Massachusetts, on the floor of Congress). The SC legislature presented
him with a gold-headed cane, which is preserved as a shrine somewhere on the USC campus today.
From Dr. Francis R. Hodges.

, (Holbrook and Fessenden's Sterotype Edition, Brattleborough, Vermont 1825); Mrs. Frances (Francis) Millett, Deep Run,
Lenoir County, North Carolina,, (1993). Rebecca died circa 1863. Egbert Rouse Rouse feels that Rebecca Phillips was the first wife of
John and I agree. We base this theory on the following data:
1. Will of William Phillip who calls James E. Harper my cousin
2. Stephen C. Phillips gave James E. Harper land for love and affection
3. Rebecca was listed with JEF on the 1860 census but Sidney was listed in 1870. Argent Phillips died in Greene Co and probably
lived with JEF and Rebecca who was her sister.

The two known children of John Elizabeth Fitzhugh4 Harper and Rebecca Hart Phillips were as follows:

i.

JAMES E.5 HARPER was born circa 1862.

William Phillips in his Will remembered several cousins including my grandmother and James E.
Harper son of JEF. William Phillips's uncle, Stephen C. Phillips, gave a farm to James E. Harper for
love and affection. I have been trying to figure out for years how James E. Harper was a cousin.
Egbert Rouse sent the information that he thought Rebecca was the daughter of William and Elizabeth
        D. Carr Phillips and the scant evidence agrees with this.

ELIZABETH HARPER was born circa 1864.

LaGrange and the Univesity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he studied medicine at Belview

Obituaries

        Dr. J. M. Hodges Dead

Dr. J. M. Hodges, well known in the southern section of this country, where for years he enjoyed wide
popularity as a physician, died at his home near LaGrange Sunday night, Sept. 12, of idigestion. His
health had not been robust for some years, owing to which he had retired from the active practice of
medicine, and was living on his farm. It was not realized by his family that he was seriously ill, if
indeed he realized it until late Sunday afternoon. He had been in his usual health, complaining a little
Sunday morning of indigestion. Late in the afternoon he grew worse, and after administering such
remedies as he deemed best, and getting little or no relief, Dr. Smithwick was called in. All that could
be done to relieve him was done, but about the hour of ten he gasped a few times and peacefully
passed into the beyond. He was interred in the family burial plot in the LaGrange cemetery Monday
afternoon in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. Rev. Perry Case, of Wilson, and
Rev. R. G. L. Edwards, of LaGrange, the first of the Christian church and the latter of the M. E.
Church, of which latter church the deceased was a member, conducted the funeral services. The floral
tributes were most profuse, attesting the high esteem in which Dr. Hodges was held by is friends and
        neighbors.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, Messsrs. Walker and Harry Hodges, of Belhaven, Mr. Joe
Hodges, of LaGrange; and two daughters, Mrs. Alonza Kennedy, of LaGrange, and Mrs. John
McGoogan, of Raeford. Dr. Hodges was twice married; his firsrt wife being a native of this county,
Miss Emma Fields, daughter of Mr. Henry Fields, a member of the well known Fields family of the

Fieldsboro section, who preceded him to the grave, in 1916.
In 1918, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Roland Hodges, of Lenoir County, who survives him.

We knew him in his home, as a citizen, a Christian and as a physician, in all of which stations we
learned to admire and respect him. He was a member of the Methodist church, and a Mason. Of sympathetic,
kind disposition, a student and well prepared for the practice of his chosen profession, he was a popular
physician and when he announced a few years ago that he was retiring from the active practice of medicine
there were expressions of regret, and in many homes there was sadness because he would answer the
call no more when pain and sickness visited the  home. A good and useful man has gone to his reward.

Death of James M. Hodges

With much surprise and deep regret the community learned of the death of Dr. J. M. Hodges,
which occurred (sic) at his home four miles from town about ten thirty Sunday night. Though he had
been slightly ailing for a day or two, his death was entirely unexpected. The immediate cause was
chronic indigestion. He had not quite completed his fifty-ninth year.

Dr. Hodges was one of the best known and best loved physicians of the county. For more than
thirty years he had practiced his profession, being located the whole while at La Grange. He was a
personal friend to all his patients, sympathetic and kind to all. About two years ago he gave up active
practice and removed to the country.

Dr. Hodges was the son of the late Simon Hodges, a farmer with large holdings in Falling Creek
township and widely known for his sterling and manly qualities. Of this family, three only survive,
Mess. Paul and Robert Hodges and Mrs. Hugh Bryan. "Mark." As Dr. Hodges was familiarly known,
received his school education in the school of Prof. Joseph Kinsey, afterwards taking a course in
        medicine and locating here.

Shortly after beginning his practice, he was married to Miss Emma Fields. To them were born
five children After the death of his first wife, Dr. Hodges was married to Mrs. Julia Hodgss.. His
oldest son, Walker, is a successful civil engineer, now located in Belhaven. The second son, Harry,
also lives there. One daughter, the wife of Prof. J. E. McGoogan, lives at Raeford. His other daughter
is Mrs. Alonzo Kennedy of La Grange. The youngest son, Joe, a youth of seventeen, is a student of
        Trinity College.

The burial services were held Monday afternoon in Fairview Cemetery and conducted by Dr. .P.
        B. Case and Rev. R. G. L. Edwards. A large concourse of friends attended the service.
