Generation One 1. John1 FIELDS married Jane Barker, daughter of Jethro Barker and Mary (Barker), in Surry County, Virginia. John died in 1735 in Surry County, Virginia. SURRY COUNTY A great deal has been abstracted on this county. I checked Will Abstracts as well as the Index to Deed and Wills on microfilm - both general index and the Index in the front of each book from about 1700 to 1754. Mrs. Haun has abstracted Court Records and those were checked, but she has only done to about 1680. Although Surry has all their records, many are in very bad shape. Many Indexes are so torn you can't tell anything about them. L. H. Hart said a lot of work was being currently done in Surry. One thing I was not able to find out was if there are Tax Lists for Surry from about 1700 to 1754. I suspect there are and these need to be checked. I checked Guardian Bonds around the time John FIELD died but there was nothing. Guardian bonds for this period are scarce. 1. DEEDS a. 2. BRITTLE2 FIELDS (John1) was born in Surry County, Virginia, in 1720. He married Mary MERCER, daughter of Thomas MERCER and Hester (MERCER), in Dobbs County, North Carolina. BRITTLE died before 1800 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. The vast majority of work on the FIELDS family was done by Ima and Aileen Mewborn and little of it is provable. Ima submitted about 30 applications to the DAR and the only one not approved was for the BRITTLE FIELDS line. I did find BRITTLE on the Sussex Co., Va. Tax List as having moved from the area about the time he appeared in Dobbs County and have worked a little on the William and Christiana Smith FIELDS line. On the 1790 Darlington Co Census were three FIELDS men - Bartholomew, William, and Ephraim. None are proven to be sons of BRITTLE but have been thought to be so; however that does not appear to work. There was a Bartholomew on the 1810 Lenoir Census and BRITTLE would not have had two sons with the same name and that Bartholomew was not the son of Shadrack. That the older Bartholomew was in Dobbs County is proven by his Pension Record - if only he had given his father. Certainly there was a connection between BRITTLE and John Cotton but what - just neighbors?. On the cross Indices in Book 6 ca 1759 several books before BRITTLE appears, there was a William FIELDS with a transaction from John Cotton. The implications are that William and BRITTLE may have been brothers and Bartholomew was Williams son. Both the name Bartholomew and DeWitt run down all of the known FIELDS line that possible came from BRITTLE. There is nothing to indicate any relationship between Moses of Greene Co and BRITTLE of Lenoir. Although it has been thought that Jeremiah who lived in Greene County was a son, I am not sure he was. The names in his family indicate a connection to John of Rhode Island. 1754 Sussex County, Virginia Insolvent Levies BRITTLE Feild NOTE: This is the year that Sussex was formed from Surry County BRITTLE FIELDS NC Colony by Margaret Hoffman P 111 - 15 October 1761 - Christopher MERCER - 623 acres in Dobbs Co on the SS of Little Contentnea Creek, adj MERCER's own line - WIT Stephen Cade, Grace Young - surveyed 22 June 1761 - Chain bearers - Thomas More, Brickle FIELD Charles Young, Surv. There is no evidence that Elizabeth Bryan ever married Jeremiah FIELDS so it is not clear if Elizabeth was born outside of wedlock or was a legitimate child of Joel Bryant. 6. Shadrack3 FIELDS (BRITTLE2, John1) was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina, circa 1780. He married Mary (Polly) Farmer, daughter of Jesse Farmer and Winifred (Farmer), in Dobbs County, North Carolina. Shadrack died circa 1850 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. Again, most of this work is by Ima and Aileen Mewborn. Much is speculation although Alexander and William are proven to be sons of Shadrack. Ima and Aileen inherited a picture of Polly Farmer FIELDS and her surname is given on the back of the picture which proves Shadrack's wife was Mary (Polly) Farmer. The only Farmer in the area at the time was Jesse Farmer so it is assumed he was her father. I have a picture of the old Shadrack FIELDS home between Taylor's Crossroads and Sharon Church and my mother stated it was the home of Shadrack, but I suspect it was the home of his son, William Council. We know that William moved to that area and had a country home. The 1850 Census shows Shadrack living with his son Malachi near LaGrange so it is highly unlikely Shadrack built such a large home in his old age. According to Ima, the family tradition is that Shadrack and his sons Bartholomew, Jesse & Thomas went to Georgia but Shadrack and Bartholomew returned to Lenoir County. Shadrack was in the War of 1812. State Of North Carolina No 503 8 July 1814 Agreeably to the Report of the Auditors appointed to settle and adjust the Military and other Claims for services performed and supplies furnished in July and August 1813, approved and filed with me. OBIT - THE ARGUS, Dec 21, 1904 The death of Mr. Bennett FIELDS, one of Goldsboro's oldest and most highly respected citizens, and a brave Confederate soldier, occurred at his home on Mulbery street, West, last night about 7:30 o'clock, of paralysis. He had been a patient sufferer for a number of years and died in the faith and hope of an eternal home beyond the skies, for he was a quiet, unassuming Christian gentleman, who owed no man any harm. He leaves a devoted wife and four children, three girls and one boy, to mourn his death and to them the Argus extends its sincere sympathy, and directs them for consolation to Him who doeth all things well. He was about 75 years of age. The funeral will be held from the home this afternoon at 5 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. F. Fry, pastor at the First Baptist church, of which the deceased was a devout member, and the interment will be made in beautiful Willow Dale cemetery. from Peg - PEGCHARLTON@aol.com. _ Mary Susan Sutton was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 16 Oct 1846 (Ibid.). He was with his regiment in the battles at Fort Sumter, James Island, Kinston, Williamston, Plymouth, and Tarboro in his own state; also at the front at Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Petersburg and for a long time was near Richmond, Va. He was captured once in Virginia but was recaptured before he was imprisoned, he saw and shared all the hardships that fell to the lot of the Confederate Soldiers. Have heard him tell how they once had to march barefoot in the snow, suffered from hunger, cold, slept on the ground, sick and weary but never thought of giving up the struggle, and in the four years of hardship never saw me or his baby daughter. At the time I had nine brothers in the Confederate Army, the oldest Capt. William Sutton was an artillery man and was stationed at Fort Fisher. Seven were private soldiers in Lee's Army. They were: Tommie, Daniel, Henry, Alec, John, Fred, and Levi Sutton. My youngest brother, Ben Sutton, joined the State Guards near the close of the war, he was only a boy when he enlisted. Fred was captured by Yankees while he was sick with measles and died of exposure, was buried in New Berne in an unmarked grave. Henry was left with the dead in the slaughter at Gettsysburg, John died of hemmorhage caused by excessive heat after a forced march with his company, he alone was brought home and interred with the family. Brother Alec was captured and imprisoned, while in a Yankee prison he had a severe attack of fever, was parolled but was so weak he died in Richmond while on his way home, like thousands of others who died in his day he lies in an unknown grave. My father's home at White Hall was used as a hospital by the Confederate soldiers while they camped in that section. I spent my time there while my husband was fighting for his country, and am glad to remember that we did all in our power to relieve the sufferings of the unfortunate ones. My father died in '64, as all his sons were in the war, it left all the women and children in the family at his home without protection and as the Yankees had destroyed everything they could find, we went through suffering and endured privations that the younger generation and those of our own time, who lived in sections where they never saw real war, can never realize. Even now when it has been a memory for 50 years the very thoughts of it all make me know that the Civil War will never be over until all of us who lived through its hardships and injustices can forget it in death. She died on 28 Feb 1915 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 72 (William Council FIELDS Family Bible.). The FIELDS Bible which came down this line appears to give the children of Redding and Olivia but it does not state, as usual, child of --, so some of this is guesswork. It is possible that Jakie was not a child but the unknown child was DeWitt. Redding William Pope was born on 18 Jan 1835 (Ibid.) (Redding W. Pope Family Bible.). His middle name may have been Carlysle. Alice Jackson. Ima's information indicates she married 1st a Kennedy and she was the daughter of Jesse and Eliza Jackson. There were no children of William Council5 FIELDS Jr. and Alice Jackson. 89. Eliza Ann5 FIELDS (William4, Shadrack3, BRITTLE2, John1) was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 26 Feb 1848 (The Felix Hardison Bible gives the year of her birth as 1849) (Felix and Martha Virginia Grubbs Hardison Family Bible, The Self- Pronouncing S. S. Teacher' Combination Bible, 1902. (The Southwestern Company, Nashville, Tenn.); East Carolina University, Joyner Library, Manuscript Division.) (William Council FIELDS Family Bible.). She married John Thomas Grubbs, son of James Grubbs and Anne Louisa Gunter, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, circa 1886. Eliza died on 7 Mar 1924 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 76 (Felix and Martha Virginia Grubbs Hardison Family Bible, The Self-Pronouncing S. S. Teacher' Combination Bible.). According to Proctor, Eliza inherited the old Shadrack FIELDS home that I have a picture of although I think it really was the William home. It was in the curve of the road where the Whites lived. I am not sure her property went that far west. W. C.'s land ran from White's property on both sides of the road to the Harvey Place, down to Harold Hall's property, down to Luten ? Swamp adj to the Worthing farm and cross Wallace Road. Felix was very fond of his mother in law. John Thomas Grubbs was born in Person County, North Carolina, on 12 Aug 1836 (Ibid.) (Tombstone.). He married Martha Catherine Aldridge, daughter of Lemuel Hardy Aldridge and Eliza Harvey, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, circa 1866. John died on 23 Aug 1907 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 71. His body was interred in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Aldridge Cemetery. He is buried in a small family Cemetery in the edge of a woods on the Aldridge Farm near Kinston. I went into the very overgrown cemetery about 1973 with Virgil Grubbs. In 1992 I could not find the cemetery as the woods had been clear cut and the adjoining FIELD seeded for timber. His stone said he was b 12 Aug 1836 and d 23 Aug 1907. This stone reads "Asleep in Jesus". He was given a Masonic Funeral and a minister from Little Washington officiated at his funeral. Dr. Charles Ware in his book on the History of the Disciples of Christ does a short bio on him. From information given by his daughter Martha Virginia - he made coffins and was considered an excellent cabinet maker, did a little doctoring and preached in the Disciples of Christ Church. He was one of the first trustees of Atlantic Christian College. He was a member of the Rountree Lodge (Masons) in Grifton. One of his grandsons from his first marriage has his tools. I gather he did not work very hard but lived off his two wives' inheritance. He did appear to be well liked from information gathered by older people I talked with. He was not listed in the 1860 Census with his family as he had moved to Pitt Co where he is found on the 1860 Census in the home of P. B. Clemons - both were wheelrights. John may have gone there to learn this art. The 1860 Census states he was b in Va. He served as a Capt. in the Civil War from Pitt. Co. The following information was found at the U. S. Archives John T. Grubbs - Co. C 38th Va Infr - Laurel Grove - Rifleman a. John Thomas Grubbs was 34 in the Civil War b. 38th Regiment of Va - Volunteers, Stewarts Brigade, Picketts Division, Longstreets Corp - Army of Northern Va. c. entered the Army as a 2nd Lt on 3 June 1861. Appointed to his rank on 8 June 1861. Elected captain of Co. C - 38th Infantry on 29 April 1862. Paroled at Appomat. on 9 April 1865 where he was a prisoner of War and had in his possession a blanket, oil cloth, bundle of clothes and three hammocks. Earlier he had dysentary and was in the hospital at Richmond on 10 July 1862 at the Chimborazo Hospital. He was transferred to Dabney Grubbs in Manchester until he was fit for duty. d. He requested emergency leave for 30 days on 20 Feb 1864 to return to Pitt County which was his home due to urgent business. Records do not give further details. After the War he moved to Lenoir County, N.C. which was a reverse migration. It is not known why he moved there, but his granddaughter indicated she had heard he was in the area sometime during the War and liked it. He preached at Catherines Lake in Onslow County and it was where he preached his last sermon. He used to take Martha with him which she enjoyed. John was ill before he died. Some of the information on the Slaughter line came from Mrs. L. E. Slaughter of New Bern in 2003. She died on 3 Jul 1888 at age 27 (William Council FIELDS Family Bible.). According to my mother, Fannie inherited that part of the FIELDS farm between Uncle Harry and Ms Lemmie White's farm. She said they had one son who died in an accident involving a horse at the age of 17. According to other information, not documented, she married 10 February 1885 to W. H. Smith of Wayne County. Could she have married 2 times? Robert's mother may have been Martha surname unknown. Robert S. Taylor. According to the 1880 Census his mother may have been a Bond. 115. Barbara Ann5 FIELDS (Alexander4, Shadrack3, BRITTLE2, John1) was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 8 May 1854 (John Moses Mewborn Family Bible, Dobbs County Bible Records, by William L. Murphy.) (George Lemuel Mewborn Family Bible.) (Death Certificate.). She married John Moses Mewborn, son of Joshua Mewborn Sr. and Winifred Wooten, on 21 Jan 1874 (John Moses Mewborn Family Bible.). Barbara died on 24 Jul 1938 in Greene County, North Carolina, at age 84. Death Certificate found in Greene County, NC #49. Certificate gives her parents and the maiden name of her mother (Collection of Ima Eula Mewborn.) (Death Certificate.). Her body was interred in Greene County, North Carolina, in Mewborn Family Cemetery. Barbara Ann was orphaned during the Civil War. Her uncle, John FIELDS of LaGrange reared her and her sister Virginia. Their brother Andrew, died young. Her father, Alexander FIELDS, was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and died from the wounds after 1863. His wife, Mariah died while he was away during the War. Ima has a picture of Barbara Ann. Her father in law gave her the scrap Cotton from the farm, which she picked herself, carded, spun, dyed and wove into a blue and white plaid bedspread. She gave this spread to her grandaughter, Beulah Barbara who then gave it to her nephew, Robert FIELDS Mewborn. After her husband died, Barbara Ann bought additional land and left each child a small farm. She had a brooch and ear rings which she hid during the Civil War. The brooch was later lost, but she made a pin from the ear rings for each of hers daughters. Ima states that her grandmother spent a great deal of time in their home and told many stories of the family. She told the story about her father, Alexander FIELDS, who as a small child, two or three years old, strayed from home and no one could find him among the corn which was very tall. His mother noticed that when the dog was fed, instead of eating as he normally did, he trotted off down the corn rows with the food in his mouth. She followed and found Alexander, hungry and dirty but very happy to see his mother. His dog had been sharing his food. Collection of Ima Mewborn OBIT - The News and Observer - 25 July 1938 - Snow Hill - MRS. BARBARA Mewborn Mrs. Barbara Mewborn, 84, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. L. Mewborn. She had been in ill health for several months, and her condition had been considered serious for sometime, so death was not unexpected. Mrs. Mewborn was a daughter of the late Alexander and Maria FIELDS. She was born and reared in Greene County. When a young woman she married John M. Mewborn who preceded her to the grave 38 years ago. After her husband's death Mrs. Mewborn took over the management of her farms and made an enviable name for herself as one of the best Farmers in the county. This kept her busy, but she always found time to take part in religious and social activities in her community, and to be a model mother to her children. In early life she joined the Primitive Baptist Church, and at her death was the oldest member of Mewborn's Church, not only in age but in years of service to the church. A son, Elder J. E. Mewborn, is co-pastor of this church and a leader in church work in this section of the State.
