1. JAMES1 DAVIS married Catherine Blythers, daughter of Wendell Blythers.
James died in Lenoir or Duplin County, North
Carolina.
Althought there are records for this family in Duplin County, it appears they
lived in Dobbs in that part of Dobbs that later became
Lenoir. It appears he had some land adj to the Taylors and Blylers.
Even with all the information from Rachel's will and estate records, I am not
sure her siblings are completely clear.
There is another James Davis of about the same age in the same area but at this
point, it appears there was no connection between the
families.
CATHERINE BLYTHERS was born BY 1732. Catherine died after 1810 in Lenoir
County, North Carolina.
The late Natalie Joyner Sugg did a great deal of research on this family as did
Sybil Hyatt from whom Natalie took some of her
research. Some of this is wrong and some is right and some I don't know about.
Natalie stated that she thought Catherine was the daughter of John Waxdale but
that can be disproven. I am inclined to think she was
the daughter of Windel Blithers/Blyer and various other spellings. I can find
little on this man other than he was the 1750 Johnston
County Tax List and he owned land exactly where James Davis lived on Southwest
Creek. Without question the name Windol of
various spellings runs all down this line.
Natalie stated that Rachel Davis named her brother Richard Prescott as one of
her heirs. Certainly she did name a Richard Prescott but
I have not seen the actual will and can't figure out who either Susannah Stanly
or Richard Prescott were. Natalie is of the opinion that
Catherine remarried Richard Prescott Sr after the death of her first husband.
Richard Sr was the son of William Prescott who had a
Will in Craven County in 1745 and was married to Mary Smith. She stated that
Richard Prescott moved to Georgia and had a Will in
Houston County dated 13 July 1849 and leaves to John Gray eldest son of Felix
and Matilda Gray and Alcy Jane and Sarah Anne only
daughters of Christian and Mary Davis part of his estate. Christian Davis was a
son of Zachariah Davis who would have been the half
brother of Prescott.
Catherine did not remarry as she is found on the 1810 Lenoir County Census.
Catherine Davis - one female 26-45, two over 45 - 9 slaves
Close to Harpers - between Isaac Barwick and Margaret Carter
As to James and Catherine having a son, James, I doubt it although another
James did live in the same area. There is no mention of a
James in Rachel's will or estate records although he could have been cut out
for some reason. It appears there were two James Davis in
the same are at the same time.
The 12 known children of James1 Davis and Catherine Blythers were as follows:
+
|
2. i. CATHERINE2 DAVIS, born circa 1750 in Lenoir or Duplin County, North
Carolina; married John
Taylor.

Tombstone, Lenoir County, NC.).
She died on 15 October 1836 in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Ibid.). She was
buried in Zachariah
Davis Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
Never married. Probably died in Lenoir County. She had a deed of gift in Duplin
County in 1841.
|
|
11. x. MARY DAVIS was born in Dobbs County (Will and Estate Records of
Rachel Davis, Duplin Co.
1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November 1828.). She married Unknown Williams.
Mary was not in the list of heirs, but she was remembered in Rachel's Will
indicating she was a sister.
There is a convenance in the Cross Indices between Mary and Zachariah Davis'
children indicating she
gave her estate to them lacking a direct heir.
|
|
12. xi. SUSANNAH DAVIS was born in Dobbs County, North Carolina
(Ibid.). She married Unknown
Stanley.
I can't be sure, but Rachel's Will indicates Susannah was a sister with
adopted children. Those
adopted children should have inherited but they are not listed in the list of
heirs.

13. xii. WINDELL DAVIS, born 15 September 1753 in Dobbs County, North
Carolina; married Elizabeth
Albertson.

in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 86 (Tombstone.). She was buried in Job
Leary Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
Her husband's first name is never given, but she had a son Job, there was an
earlier Job who was a close neighbor of the Davis and
Taylor families. Her stone gives her husband's name.
The three known children of Ann Civil2 Davis and Cornelius Leary were as
follows:
|
|
20. i. SUCKEY3 LEARY was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Will
and Estate Records of Rachel
Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November 1828.).

4. NANCY2 DAVIS (James1) was born in Dobbs County (Will and Estate
Records of Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will
written 27 November 1828.). She married Unknown Lawson (Ibid.).
His first name is not given, but I think it was Christopher.
The four known children of Nancy2 Davis and Unknown Lawson were as follows:
|
|
23. i. CHRISTOPHER3 LAWSON was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina
(Ibid.). He married Nancy Davis, daughter of Windell Davis and Elizabeth
Albertson.
|
|
24. ii. DAVID LAWSON was born in Lenoir County (Ibid.).

26. iv. JAMES LAWSON was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Ibid.).

5. ELIZABETH (BETSY)2 DAVIS (James1) was born on 14 October 1759 in Dobbs
County, North Carolina (Ibid.). She married
Hezekiah Dobson (Ibid.).
Her husband's name is not given, but Mickey Elmore provided his first name.
The five known children of Elizabeth (Betsy)2 Davis and Hezekiah Dobson
all born in Duplin County, North Carolina, were as
follows:
|
|
27. i. JAMES3 DOBSON was born (Ibid.).
28. ii. JOHN DOBSON was born (Ibid.).
29. iii. PERRY DOBSON was born (Ibid.).
30. iv. SALLY DOBSON was born (Ibid.).
31. v. ALCEY DOBSON was born (Ibid.).

6. ALCY2 DAVIS (James1) was born in Dobbs County (Ibid.). She married
Unknown Albertson (Ibid.).
The two known children of Alcy2 Davis and Unknown Albertson were as
follows:
|
|
32. i. POLLY3 ALBERTSON.
33. ii. KITTY ALBERTSON.
|
7. ZACHARIAH2 DAVIS (James1) was born on 8 December 1771 in Dobbs County,
North Carolina (Ibid.) (Tombstone.). He
married Charity Zeagler (Ibid.). He died on 17 October 1855 in Lenoir County,
North Carolina, at age 83 (Ibid.). He was buried in
Zachariah Davis Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
His stone gives his parents and Charity's stone gives her parents as Christian
and Nancy Zargee; however, there was no Christian
Zargee in the area just a Christian Zeagler and it is consistently spelled that
way. I am using the spelling of Zeagler. Sybil Hyatt gives
Nancy Zeagler's parents as Nancy and Henry Grady.
It is more than possible that some of the "children" listed were actually
grandchildren. On the 1850 Census, there was a Charity age 20
and Elizabeth S. aged 12. For Charity to have had a child at the age of 49 was
a bit hard to believe.
CHARITY ZEAGLER was born on 10 September 1780 in Dobbs County, North
Carolina (Ibid.). She died on 30 July 1858 in
Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 77 (Ibid.). She was buried in Zachariah
Davis Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
The 13 known children of Zachariah2 Davis and Charity Zeagler were as
follows:
|
|
34. i. SARGET3 DAVIS.
35. ii. MALACHI DAVIS.
36. iii. CHRISTIAN DAVIS.
37. iv. JAMES H. DAVIS.
38. v. CHARITY DAVIS married Riddick Burgeon ( Collection of William
(Mickey) Elmore, Greenville,
NC.).
39. vi. BENJAMIN F. DAVIS died before 1868 (Ibid.).
Benjamin appears not to have married and his siblings were his heirs -
THomas, Malachi, James,
Zachariah, Christian, Mary Parker, ELizabeth who md Gabriel P. Cox and Charity
who md Riddick
Burgeon. He left out his brother John's heirs.
40. vii. MARY (POLLY) DAVIS was born circa 1800 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Will and Estate
Records of Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November
1828.). She married
Zenas Parker ( Collection of Sybil Hyatt, original Collection at the Kinston,
NC Public Library.). She
died on 6 July 1892 in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Collection of William
(Mickey) Elmore.).
There was a Mary married to a Parker as the sister and she was still alive in
1868. Think she was
married to Zenas Parker.
41. viii. ZERGEE DAVIS was born on 4 April 1806 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Tombstone.). He died
on 10 September 1838 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 32 (Ibid.).
42. ix. ZACHARIAH DAVIS was born circa 1808 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Will and Estate
Records of Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November
1828.). He married
Elizabeth Croom, daughter of Lott Croom and Elizabeth Rasberry.
|
+
|
43. x. JOHN GRADY DAVIS, born circa 1814 in Lenoir County, North Carolina;
married Mary A. E. (Davis); married Rachel W. (Davis).
|
|
44. xi. ELIZABETH (BETSY) DAVIS was born on 2 June 1815 in Lenoir County,
North Carolina
(Tombstone.) (Will and Estate Records of Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835
Will written 27
November 1828.). She married Gabriel P. Cox (Tombstone.) (Collection of William
(Mickey) Elmore.).
She died on 24 June 1869 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 54
(Tombstone.). She was buried
in Zachariah Davis Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.
Zachariah had a daughter Betsy. It is assumed Elizabeth Cox was that Betsy.
45. xii. THOMAS DAVIS was born circa 1820 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Will and Estate Records of
Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November 1828.)
(Collection of William
(Mickey) Elmore.).
46. xiii. JONAH DAVIS was born on 5 April 1821 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Tombstone.). He died
on 5 October 1843 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 22 (Ibid.). He was
buried in Zachariah
Davis Cemetery,, Lenoir County, North Carolina.

8. MALACHI2 DAVIS (James1) was born on 20 April 1774 in Dobbs County,
North Carolina (Will and Estate Records of Rachel
Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November 1828.). He married Mary
Wooten on 9 February 1800 in Lenoir County,
North Carolina. He died on 20 September 1806 in Lenoir County, at age 32.
The proof of the birth and death dates is not known - maybe from the Bible Ms.
Hyatt had access to. Information below from Steve

The Davises
On November 14, 1978, my cousins, Margaret (Thompson) Dorman and Bobby
(Thompson) Sammons, took me to visit the grave
of my Great-Great-Grand mother, Mary (Wooten) Davis. I was shocked to think
that my Great-Great-Grandmother was buried so
close to home of my kin which I had visited and never before had I heard of her
being buried in Alabama, or having lived in Alabama.
I copied from her tombstone myself the following:
To the memory of
Mrs. Mary Davis Who was born in Lenoir Co., N.C. On the 22nd day of January
1777 and departed this life in Barber* Co., Ala., on
the 27th day of August, 1854 *Note: Barbour Co. is spelled Barber on the slab.
This private cemetery, know as the Ivey Cemetery, is located about 100
feet to the left front side of the old home built by Barna
Ivey, the son-in-law of Mrs. Mary Davis, about 1845. The Barna Ivey family
lived in a two-storied house which he built at
Borumville, Russell County, Alabama, in the early 1830's. This house they sold
to Henry Key, son of Henry Key, a Revolutionary
Soldier who is buried in North Carolina. A grandson of Henry Key, H.T.
Ellison, has a picture and deed of the borunville house which
is dated December 26, 1846. He showed this picture and deed to my cousin
Margaret (Thompson) Dorman. Since the Ivey family
moved into their new home in Glennville, the house must have been built in
1845-1846. The house has changed hands many times.
Tim Mcgough, Tine Davis, and presently in 1978 it is owned by Mr. and Mrs.
(Marie) Thurston Worrell, R.F.D. Pittsview, AL 26871.
(Note: Glennville gets its mail at Pittsview.) This house and cemetery is
located at the end of a road which turns off Highway 431 at
the two-stored house of the Richard Comer family. Then past a one stored home
of the Richard Comer family and ends about four
miles at the Ive-McGough-Davis-Worrell home.
3.1 The Ivey Cemetery, the Wooten Cemetery, and the Davises
It seems Mrs. Mary Davis lived with her son-in-law and her daughter Alcy
Ann Wooten (Davis) Ivey, whose niece (Lucy (Long)
Hurt) wrote of as Aunt Ivey. Alcey was her oldest child and had 12 children
who certainly needed a Grandmother. Research done by
Margaret T. Dorman: The 1820 Index to U.S. Census of Georgia lists: Wooten,
James Jr. - Hancock County, GA; Davis, Mary E. -
Hancock County, Ga; Ivey, Barney - Baldwin County, GA.
Inasmuch as Malachi Davis, the husband of Mary (Wooten) Davis, died in
1806, in North Carolina, and she is listed in the 1820
Census of Georgia, Margaret Dorman concludes she moved from North Carolina to
Georgia between 1810 and 1820. Margaret
Dorman: When I was in Washington a few years ago, I read in the early Lenoir
County, N.C. 1800 Census these names appear: James
Davis, Zachariah Davis, Catherine Davis and Malachi Davis. It indicated
Malachi Davis as 1 Male, 1 Female, 7 slaves. (Note:
Malachi marred in 1800.) 1810 Lenoir Co., N.C. Census names: James Davis,
Rachel Davis, Wendell Davis, Bobby Davis, Wm.
Davis and Mary Davis. It indicates Mary Davis as having 1 Male Child, 1
female, and 3 Female Children. (Note: husband was dead.)
1820 Lenoir County N.C. Census lists: James Davis, John Davis, Zachariah Davis
and Wendell Davis.
After a thorough study of a five-page, single spaced paper of genealogical
records entitled James Davis of Lenoir County, North
Carolina, author unnamed; however it does state in the article that the Bible
records of Davises was copied May 22, 1942 by Sybil
Hyatt, from a Bible belonging to Clifton Noble, Dover, N.C., Rt. 1, I have made
the chart as shown of the Davises of North Carolina.
The names were verified by an article in Our Yesterday,
History-Biography-Genealogy by A.T. Outlaw on Davis-Jerman. Also some
names verified by legal documentation are shown further.
MARY WOOTEN was born on 22 January 1777 in Dobbs County, North Carolina (
Tombstone.). She died on 27 August 1854 in
Barbour County, Alabama, at age 77 (Ibid.).
The four known children of Malachi2 Davis and Mary Wooten all born in
Lenoir County, North Carolina, were as follows:
|
|

Estate Records of Rachel
Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November 1828.). She married
Barna Ivey, son of
Robert Ivey and Elizabeth West, on 12 December 1816 in Lenoir County, North
Carolina (Will and
Estate Records of Rachel Davis, Duplin Co. 1828 - 1835 Will written 27 November
1828.);
Date from the Barna Bible, Alabama GRC. She died on 14 November 1886 in Barbour
County,
Alabama, at age 85.
48. ii. ELIZABETH (BETSEY) DAVIS was born on 8 September 1802 (Ibid.). She
died on 26 August 1811
at age 8.

She married Nimrod
Washington Long on 22 March 1821 in Georgia (Ibid.). She died on 20 August 1840
at age 35.
Unclear if they married in Baldwin or Houston County. They then moved to
Russell County,
Alabama.
50. iv. MALACHI WOOTEN DAVIS was born on 30 April 1807 (Ibid.). He died
on 22 April 1881 in
Glennville,, Alabama, at age 73.
He lived with his sister, Alcy, never married and was a Mason.
|
13. WINDELL2 DAVIS (James1) was born on 15 September 1753 in Dobbs
County, North Carolina (Ibid.) (Windel Davis Jr
Family Bible, (copy posted on Lenoir Co GENWEB ARCHIVES).). He married
Elizabeth Albertson, daughter of Samuel Albertson,
on 2 January 1789. He died on 15 June 1848 in Lenoir County, North Carolina,
at age 94 (Ibid.).
Some of the information came from Mickey Elmore and some from a database sent
to Robert Taylor but I am not sure of what some of
the documentation is or if it is correct.
Steve has additional children of Rachel, Louise and Willie but they are not
listed in the estate records of their aunt Rachel.
ELIZABETH ALBERTSON was born on 14 October 1759 in Duplin County, North
Carolina (Ibid.). She died in Lenoir County,
North Carolina.
The eight known children of Windell2 Davis and Elizabeth Albertson were as
follows:

McLendal Jarman. She died on 28 November 1876 in Duplin County, Alabama, at age
85.

A. E. (Davis) (Tombstone.). He married Rachel W. (Davis) circa 1849. He died on
2 April 1855 in Lenoir County, North Carolina
(Collection of William (Mickey) Elmore.).
Steve gives his wife as Mary Elizabeth Whitfield daughter of Constantine but
there is no Mary Elizabeth listed in the Constantine
Whitfield Bible. Steve gives John's 2nd wife as Rachel Whitfield who then
married his brother Malachi but there is no Rachel listed in
the Whitfield Bible. His widow was Rachel W. so the W could have stood for
Whitfield.
MARY A. E. (DAVIS) was born on 1 November 1813 (Tombstone.). She died on
25 June 1848 in Lenoir County, North Carolina,
at age 34 (Ibid.).

WIT James T. Davis, Zachariah Davis
NOTE: Her will was written in 1828
This clearly indicates she had a half brother, Richard Prescott, but I am not
so sure he was a brother
but maybe a cousin. In Book 9 of the Cross Indices is a conveyance between
Catherine Davis and
others to Ann Prescott. I rather doubt James Davis was dead by 1771. There is
no Prescott on the
Lenoir Printed Census but there is a Catherine Davis who appears to be our
Catherine. It is possible
that Catherine moved to Georgia. Prescott was not mentioned in the division of
Rachel's estate.
There is also the question of who Susannah Stanley was.
