Kinstons first public school was the Kinston Graded School, a combined grammer and high school on east Lenoir Ave, between North Independence and North East Streets built on land donated by Jesse Grainger. By 1919 Graingers weather boarded school was replaced with Kinstons first high school, known as Grainger School.
