Notes for FRANCIS ROUNTREE:

NOTE: MOST RESEARCHERS IN PITT COUNTY ONLY DEAL WITH JESSE ROUNTREE BUT IN MY OPINION THE FAMILY CONNECTS BACK TO FRANCES ROUNTREE AND EVEN FRANCIS ROWNTREE IN ENGLAND. THESE ARE NOTES I HAVE GATHERED ON THIS FAMILY THROUGH THE YEARS. I CANNOT SAY ALL OF IT IS CORRECT BUT THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION.

Grantor: Members of Baptist Church

Grantee: Jesse Rountree and James Powel.

Power to purchase 1 A. for church.

Wit: Jonathan Frizzle, John Rogers, William Serman.

(Vol. III, page 144)

Ellison, Judith DuPree, Index and Abstracts of Deeds of Record of

Pitt County, N.C., 4 Vols. (Vol. I, 1761-1785; Vol. II, 1782-1801;

Vol. III, 1801-1817; Vol. IV, 1822-1832).

The Rountree Church was affiliated with the other baptists churches,

Handcock and Red Banks during the first few years, but those who

broke away to organize the church at Rountree had a different

philosophy. They came to believe "no creed but the bible" which was

associated with the Disciples of Christ movement. They believed that

each member had the intelligence to interpret the bible. And given

some of the prior issues that indiiduals had with the Primitive

Baptist church controlling their lives, I think they were looking for

a church that did not exert its will over the members.

Gen. William Clark was one of their ministers and the one who

supposedly laid the groundwork for Rountree becoming Disciples of

Christ (Christian) a few years before Alexander Campbell came through

the area and preached at Rountree in 1834 when the church became

associated with the Disciples of Christ movement, along with six

other churches in the region.

Charles Crossfield Ware wrote extensively about the Disciples of

Christ Church history. I think he put a detailed history of Rountree

Church in the Rountree Chronicles.

INFORMATION FROM PEGGY NESBITT

Thank you for the multitude of information on Rountree and Kennedy. It sure is bringing up interesting questions and just where my Cherry Roundtree(Rountree) m. John Kennedy fit in, in NC.

What is really interesting is that you found a marriage record for Cherry Roundtree m. John Kennedy on 16 Mar 1785. Do you happen to have a copy of whatever that was in? Isn¹t it interesting that there were a lot of Roundtree marriages close together in Craven Co. Were they spelled Roundtree or Rountree in the records.

22 Mar 1783, Obed Roundtree m. Sarah Bryant. Obed m. 1st, Fereby Harrell of Bertie. (interesting that Mary Cherry was from Bertie Co.) Any idea if this was a late in life marriage for Obed or did 1st wife die young and he married again while young?

2 Mar 1785, Moses Roundtree m. Argent King (interesting that her given name is Argent!)

16 Mar 1785, Cherry Roundtree m. John Kennedy

Jan 1782 Jesse Rountree Jr m. Winnifred Jenkins in Pitt Co.,NC. That¹s just before the above marriages in Craven Co.

Also above interesting when you consider that on 26 Jun 1771, Obed and Moses Rountree were Witnesses to Deed of John Frizzle in Pitt Co.,NC.

In Pitt Co., before 1771,

In 1762 Francis Rountree, Obed Rountree and David Perkins were together on tax list.

In 1762 it was also Jesse Rountree, Micager Heart and Abraham Hill

In 1762 it was also John Keneday and Jessee Keneday

In 1762 it was Edmund Keneday

In 1762 it was Eleazar Cherry

In 1763 it was Francis, Obed and Moab Rountree together on Tax list

In 1763 it was Jesse Rountree and Micager Hart

In 1763 it was John Kennedy

In 1763 it was Edmond Cannon

In 1763 it was Eleazar Cherry

Any idea of when or where Obed Rountree died?

The above date for marriage of Cherry Roundtree and John Kennedy of Mar 1785 is probably correct and some dates in Am. Rev. papers for John Kennedy either given wrong by daughter, Argent Kennedy Crosswell or written wrong by person doing the writing. The papers have the oldest daughter, Cleay (or Cloey etc.) as being born in Jan 1785. I¹m guessing from what you found that she was really born Jan 1786.

In the Pension papers, their daughter Argent also states that they were married in Pitt Co.,NC. Wonder if they were really married in Craven Co., moved to Pitt Co and then moved to Sumter Dist.,SC. Wonder if they lived in Pitt Co. when Argent was born which was 1787?

Am attaching what I typed out from John Kennedy¹s Pension papers.

Find it interesting that Probate¹s for William Rountree, 1791 and Francis 1793 in Craven County, NC

According to 1790 Census William and Francis are in Craven Co.,NC, that¹s before the 2 above Probates.

Did Cherry Roundtree belong in that group?

I¹m getting confused about the Francis Rountree whose Probate is 1748. with unnamed wife, daughter and son¹s Kader (Cader), William, Moses and Francis. Some say his wife was Mary Coleman.

Another source says that Francis Rountree, the son of Francis Rountree m. Susan Amos was born 1729 and that he married a Mabel Thompson. Do you have any evidence of who is who?

The Rountree surname for Cherry was gleaned from approved DAR papers and Index.

Interesting that in 1810, Sumter Co.,SC is following:

John Kennedy p.107 200001-01011

Mos. Roundtree p.112 010010-13100

Moslem Roundtree p.112 000100-00000

Wright Roundtree p.112 000200-00000

Attached is typed out info that is in Pension Papers for John Kennedy m. Cherry Roundtree.

Gates Battle of Camden he acted as Seargeant of the Rear Guard, and that he received an honorable Discharge in the latter part of the year 1781, soon after the Battle of Eutaw Springs; that she believes that the Discharge or Discharges her said Father received for the services herein referred to, were lost or destroyed before the death of her said Father as she does not recollect that she ever saw them; that subsequently to the Battle of Eutaw Springs her Father the said John Kennedy again enlisted in the service she thinks under Captain Hadley but was in no more Battles after this last enlistment; that her Father the said John Kennedy was married to her mother soon after the Revolutionary War, in Pitt County North Carolina, as she believes; that she does not know that there is any Record of their Marriage Either public or private, but she hopes the proofs which she sends herewith will be Satisfactory; that her Father and Mother removed from North Carolina into Sumbter District South Carolina, in or about the year 1802, and resided there until their death; that her Father the aforesaid John Kennedy died in Sumter District aforesaid on or about the 29th of November 1832; that just before her Fathers last sicknefs he made arrangements to go to North Carolina to obtain roof from living witnefses to enable him to apply for a pension, but his death prevented him from making application, that her mother aforesaid never applied for a Pension during her life because she did not know she was entitled to one or because she had no person to aid her in an attempt; and that the only children of the said John and Cherry Kennedy are this Declarant aged Sixty Tow years, and Sarah Crofswell aged Sixty years; she therefore prays that her Father's name be placed upon the Pension Roll under the act. Of 7th June 1832 and her mothers name under the acts of 1838, 1843 and 1844 aforesaid, and that said pension be made payable to her and her only sister aforesaid and father this declarant saith not.

The elder Jesse Rountree (son of Francis who died in Chowan Co in 1734) died

in Oct/Nov 1777 in Craven County. His son, Jesse Rountree (Jr.) was born in

1765 and had settled in southwestern Pitt County near his brother-in-law

John Frizzle sometime after the Revolutionary War. So to my knowledge,

between 1785 and 1820, there was only one adult male living in Pitt County

by the name of "Jesse Rountree", the man who was the son of Jesse & Rachel

Rountree, who fought in the Continental Army during the Revolution, who

served as the Pitt County Sheriff and who founded Rountree Church. Since the

Red Banks Church minutes that mention Jesse are dated 1793-1794, I think

this leaves no doubt which Jesse is mentioned.

Rountree family caused me to remember these items from

the Red Banks minutes of 1793 and 1794 that led to Jesse Rountree's being

"turned out of the church", as most Primitive Baptists call it:

25 May 1793 - the minutes for mention a "dissatisfaction" between Mr. Jesse

Roundtree and Br. John Dew, with steps ordered to resolve the problem.

26 Apr 1794 - the "difficulty" between Br. Dew and Br. Roundtree was

postponed.

6 June 1794 - the problems between Br. Roundtree and Br. Dew were postponed

again

12 Sept 1794 - John Dew and Jesse Roundtree were "Excommunicated for not

submitting to the church".

I searched through the minutes through the year 1823, and I found no further

reference to Jesse Rountree. He later joined another Baptist sect before

helping to form the Rountree Disciples of Christ Church. Does anyone know

anything about to what church he might have belonged between 1794 and 1815?

Although this information may not seem relevant, I think it may have value

in this discussion.

Background -- William Tomlinson [died 1817] is my ancestor...

son Thomas Tomlinson [died c1840] marr Mary 'Polly' Rountree [died 1855]

(Mary said to be dau of Frank Rountree or John Rountree & Betsey Daniels)

son Stephen Tomlinson marr Mary 'Polly' Rountree (Mary said to be dau of

Moses Rountree & Theresa Thomas)

Lucas website entries:

William Tomlinson [died 1817] settled at the old Tomlinson home place,

and received a share of the farm from his father Jonathan (John) Tomlinson

[died c1777]. The family sold turpentine at the Francis Rountree landing on

Contentnea Creek, now called Rountree Bridge.

[Around time of 1790 census] He probably lived northwest of Contentnea

Creek and north of Black Creek that flows into the Contentnea. (J. Clifton

Tomlinson wrote that William Tomlinson lived near Rountree's Bridge in front

of Daniel's Chapel Church on Old Black Creek Road)

When I look at the map in "North Carolina County Maps (1800)" by Bruce

Pruitt [see page 15], it appears this area (in 1800) was adjacent to Wayne

County, Edgecombe County and Pitt County. I am not familiar with this part

of NC, so I could be mistaken. (my family was raised in Beaufort County)

Could Daniel's Chapel Church be relevant to this discussion? Does anyone

know the history of Daniels Chapel near Rountree's Bridge?

You may be referring to what is called the Rountree - Askew-Moseley House. That house is on 58 - coming from Snow Hill it is on the left just past Mewborn's Crossroads. Isabelle Fletcher lives in it. The house was built in the 1700's but I dont know where they got the Rountree part of it. Earliest I can prove is the Askew family. The property adj my Moore family property which my aunt by marriage and 2 first cousins now own. I have never seen anything that indicated the Rountree family lived in that specific area. Nothing in the architecture book on hwy 11 but that would be more in the area of the Rountree family.

Abstract of NC Supreme Court Case # 301: BENTLEY vs. FORBES, no date - Pitt County.

Luke BENTLEY, Whitney NICHOLS, and wife Mary, Ben BENTLEY (admin. of

Elizabeth BENTLEY), John BENTLEY, Mark BENTLEY, Matthew BENTLEY

versus Benjamin FORBES, Robert R. GWALTNEY, and wife Polly, William

ROUNTREE and wife Sally, Honour BARROW.

Tapley BENTLEY (died Pitt County in Sept. 1796) married Elizabeth

_____ (died June 1, 1797). Tapley was poor and had little property,

a few cattle, hogs and two horses at his death. He left five small

children:

1) Luke BENTLEY,

2) Mary BENTLEY, md. age 20 to Whitney NICHOLS,

3) John BENTLEY, died 1811,

4) Mark BENTLEY, died Aug. 1804,

5) Matthew BENTLEY, died under age 21.

The will of Tapley BENTLEY was proved by Benjamin BARROW, executor.

Thomas BENTLEY'S mother (also the mother of Tapley BENTLEY) stayed

with the children for one year after the death of Tapley. He left

provision for the children's support.

The children's grandmother stayed with the children until the day

of the estate sale. Then John BENTLEY took the two smallest children

and old Benjamin BARROW took the rest of the children. After 18

months, John BENTLEY broke up house and moved to the southward. He

took the two smallest children to Mr. BARROW. John BENTLEY was paid

$60.00 at Holland JOHNSON'S Shop for keeping the two children. While

at BARROW'S, Mark and Luke BENTLEY ran away together, but Luke returned.

Amy HANDCOCK took in Mark BENTLEY and he died at her house and was

buried there.

Benjamin BARROW clothed and boarded the five children of Tapley

BENTLEY for 18 months and he had a great deal of trouble with them.

After that, two died and two, John and Mary (Polly) BENTLEY, were

bound out apprentice.

John BENTLEY was apprenticed by Benjamin BARROW to Richard BALDREE

at age 6 or 7. John BENTLEY died at house of Richard BALDREE at age 13 or 14.

Mrs. Mathiah BRILEY kept Polly BENTLEY. William NICHOLS says Mary

(Polly) BENTLEY was no older than 20 when she married Whitney NICHOLS.

Honour married Benjamin BARROW (he died in 1808) and she remarried

and removed to Tennessee.

The will of Benjamin BARROW of Pitt County was dated Sept. 5, 1807

and probated August term 1808. He left legacies to wife Honor;

grandson Benjamin FORBES; granddaughters Polly and Sally FORBES.

Polly FORBES married Robert GWALTNEY.

Sally FORBES married William ROUNTREE (died by Dec. 1827).

Benjamin FORBES removed out of state.

What perplexes me the most about this case is this:

How is Tapley Bentley related to Benjamin Barrow?

Was Tapley Bentley's wife Elizabeth one of Benjamin Barrow's daughters?

There has to be a family relationship for the Bentleys to be suing

the heirs of Benjamin Barrow, doesn't there? This question just

drives me crazy.

And of course, what is the name of Benjamin's Barrow's daughter (we

assume) who was the mother of Benjamin Forbes, Sallie Forbes, and

Mary "Polly" Forbes Gwaltney?

Looking at this again (and I cannot begin to tell you how many times

I have looked at that abstract above) I see some real problems with

my earlier conclusions.

ATTENTION EVERYONE:

I had somehow pieced together [INCORRECTLY] that Sallie Forbes was a

daughter of Benjamin Forbes and Elizabeth "Betsy" Tyson, and that

Elizabeth "Betsy" Tyson's parents were Abraham Tyson (d. 1802) and

Honor (Bowen?).

I think it was one of my favorite researchers who told me that

Sallie's mother was Elizabeth "Betsy" Tyson, but I have not kept the

best notes on that tidbit, either, so I am not going to blame my good

ol' friend for any of my errors. I do regret that I may have passed

along incorrect information to other people.

SOURCE: Frank Barrow

Benjamin Barrow and Honor never had children of any sort.

Benjamin Barrow m. 1st a widow by the name of Elizabeth Bentley with 6 children, all Bentley children - Elizabeth died within 2 years, children left home, and Benjamin then m. Honor Tyson , widow of Abraham Tyson, who had 7 children (none of these were Benjamin's children). The names of Abraham Tyson's and Honor Tyson's children were (1) Diceu, (2) Sally, (3) Jacob, (4) Temperance, (5) Elizabeth, (6) Bowen, & (7) Honor. (Raised by Benjamin)

Daughter Elizabeth, # (5) above, m. Arthur or Benjamin - maybe Arthur Benjamin Forbes and they had 6 children, (1) Sally, (2) Polly, (3) Arthur Benjamin, Jr. (4) William Henry, (5) John, & (6) William?.

Daughter Sally # (1) above, m. Wiliam Roundtree, and they had 5 children; (1) Mary "Polly", (2) Elizabeth, (3) Martha Salina, (4) Winifred, & (5) Charles.

All of the above information can be found in the Libraries - Supreme court Records, Census, and Forbes family information. I do not have further Forbes family information because there is no relation to Benjamin Barrow. However, Clement Forbes is believed to have m. Sarah Barrow - whom I believe was the daughter of Benjamin's Father - Richard - because she was older. Nothing in concrete on this Sarah Barrow.

SOURCE: Bob Forbes

Rick - I appreciate you passing on all this info, and while I realize it's

not your personal research, just need to clarify a thing or two at the very

bottom of your email where you mention Sallie (and several other spelling

variants) Forbes's ancestors... a line that I'm researching off & on. I

think we have good proof that her parents were Benjamin Forbes and Elizabeth

"Betsy" Tyson. And we have strong circumstantial evidence that this

Benjamin Forbes's father was a Clement Forbes. But we don't know for sure

who this Clement Forbes's father was; nevertheless, we're almost sure it was

not Arthur Forbes. More likely was a John or Benjamin Forbes, and perhaps

most likely it was a Benjamin, with this grandson of the same name having

married Betsy Tyson, above. Still looking for that elusive proof!

Notes for THOMAS EUGENE CANNON:

SOURCE: Trish W. Cobb

Thomas Eugene Cannon, or "Uncle Eugene" as my mother called him, was

a gr-gr-uncle. He was the clerk for the Town of Winterville for many

years. Prior to that he had been a bookkeeper for A. G. Cox

Manufacturing Co.

He was related to A. G. Cox. I can trace both their lines back to

the same ancestor who was a CANNON, but I haven't yet connected them

to the same Cox ancestor.

Eugene's wife, Carrie Ella Smith was a good friend of my

grandmother. They were school mates at the old Winterville Academy.

In Response To: family tree (walter cannon)

Walter...I have a letter written by my paternal

grandfather, Thomas Eugene Cannon, to my father, Edwin Eugene Cannon.

The letter was sent from Winterville, NC. It is dated July 15th, 1971. At that time, my

grandfather was 88 years old. In the letter, he states: Thomas Cannon (1811-1884) married Allie Cox

1815-1887). He says that Allie Cox's brother was Abram Cox, who was sheriff of Pitt county for four

years (he doesn't say what years). He says that these Cox's were related to A. G. Cox, of Winterville. My

grandfather mentions A. G. Cox, saying that he called him "Cousin Amos." I have no direct reference to

Geneva Cox Cannon. Can you tell me more about her?
