The Joseph Parrott Hardee Home Place This old home stood on a hill near Kinston's Country Club, until it was burned on Sunday, February 10, 1963. It was built prior to the Civil War, was of a handsome Colonial type, and on a ridge that overlooked a large fertile area on which was located the home of Joseph and Sarah Croom Hardee. It stood on lands that were part of the original land grants from the King of England in 1711 to ancestors of the Hardee family. Joseph Parrott Hardee built the house in the late 1850's. Before that time there was a smaller story and a half house at the foot of the hill in which Bright Hardee lived. The property on the original land grant extended from the banks of the Neuse River on the south to Hull Road on the north, and touched the Richard Caswell property on the west. John and Stella are great favorites of this compiler. John spells his last name MEWBORNE - an e on the end of the name indicates a Republician and John was a Republician when no one else owned up to being one. One of the most interesting tidbits in this entire family is that the births of John, his father, and his grandfather took place in three different centuries. The odds of that happening is extremely small. No issue. There are numerous clippings for this family in the Collection of Ima Mewborn. 12 . Even after Grandmother Mewborn died, I usually stopped by to see Miss Gladys on trips to Kinston as she was one of my most favorite people. If the weather was nice, she was usually holding court on her large front porch sitting in her favorite rocker. She enjoyed good health until she died, living by herself. She used to, when really pushed, drop little tidbits about immediate members of my family, but she would never tell me as much as I begged for since it was the juicy bidbits I wanted, and she was not one to gossip. She was one of the greatest ladies I ever knew. Mr. Edwards owned and operated Edwards Funeral Home a successful business establishment in Kinston. My family has always made use of their services even though Press was horrified when I wanted to bury Grandmother Susie in a pine box. WEDDING WRITEUP The LaRoque-Hines Nuptials - a Brilliant Social Event CHURCH CROWDED TO OVERFLOWING With Society in Radiant Attire. The Decorations Magnificent Presents Numerous and Handsome The LaRoque-Hines wedding, which took place at the Christian Church last evening, was probably one of the prettiest marriages which it has ever been the pleasure of Kinstonians to Witness. The church was crowded early by a throng of friends who had ample time to study the beautiful decorations and enjoy the several selections charmingly rendered by the organist, Miss Nannie Goodson. The last selection, "The Angel's Serenade" had hardly died away when the entrancing strains of the Mendlelssohn wedding march pealed forth and down the central aisle, preceded by the four ushers, Messers W. C. Fields, S. A. Quinerly, E. Prentiss Wooten and J. Frank Webb, appeared Misses Mary Harvey and Rosalie Smith, bridesmaids, immediately followed by Messrs. O. K. LaRoque and J. Joel Stevenson, groomsmen; after these came the other two bridesmaids, Misses Bessie Patrick and Mary Scott Monroe, followed by the Groomsmen, Messrs, E. M. Land and Will Hunter; next came the dame of Honor, Mrs. A. A. Shufford, Jr of Hickory, followed by the maid of honor, Miss Helen Gray, and then entered the bride on the arm of her brother, Mr. Harvey Hines. Proceeding to the alter, they were met by the groom, on the arm of his best man, Mr. Mab LaRoque, and there, while the organist softly rendered the beautiful strains of Schuberts serenade, Rev. P. B. Hall, solemnly and impressively, using in part the Episcopal ceremony, uttered the words necessary to unite forever the destinies of two kindred souls. At the conclusion of the ceremony, to the inspiring strains of Tannhausers' march, the happy couple, with their attendants, left the church amid showers of congratulations and good wishes, going immediately to the A. & N.C. Station where they took a special car on the west bound passenger train for Goldsboro, where they were given a delightful reception by Miss Rosalie Smith, after which the bride and groom took the north bound train for a tour of the nothern cities, the attendants returning to Kinston this morning. Miss Hines wore at the ceremony an exquisite gown of white satin crepe, hood embroidered in white roses, with trimmings of duchess lace and pearls, her veil being heavily caught up with a bar of diamonds and pearls, the gift of the groom. She carried a shower boquet of lilies of the valley. Mrs. Shufford, the dame of honor, was gowned in a creation of crepe de chine with pearls, and carried a boquet of pink roses. The maid of honor, Miss Helen Gray, was similarly attired in pink with pearls, and also carried a boquet of pink roses. The bridesmaids were costumed in lace robes made over taffeta with pearls, their boguets being pink roses. The groom and gentleman attendants were all attired in covential evening dress. Too much cannot be said of the interior decorations of the church for this occasion. The color scheme of pink and green was most harmoniously executed. Furnishing a scene of beauty pleasing to the eye. The Altar was a veritable forest of holly, ferns, palms, bamboo, and potted plants. The wedding arch, studded with electric bulbs, was completely covered with ribbons, flowers, bamboo, and holly. On the walls were hung large wreaths of bamboo and pink ribbons. Down the central aisle were placed at regular intervals tall candelabra covered in evergreens and pink ribbons. Mr. and Mrs. LaRoque were the recipients of a large and handsome collection of presents, principal among these being a handsome chest of silver, the gift of the parents of the bride. Mrs. LaRoque is the charming and acomplished daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lovit Hines and one of Kinston's most prominent families. Mr. W. D. LaRoque, Jr. is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. LaRoque, one of Kinston's oldest families, and is well and favorably known as a successful young business man. He is prominent grocer and is President of the Retail Grocers and General Merchants Association. Collection of Ima Mewborn.
