Subject: Three Generation report of Francis M. Kilpatrick--Incomplete with notes
Please find attached a very brief breakdown and notes of what is known of my
FRANCIS M. KILPATRICK at this time. The RICHBOURG FAMILY is well docmented,
but the KILPATRICK branch remains a mystery/puzzle. If this group of
Kilpatrick's rings a bell for anyone, please, please, let our family know.

Descendants of Francis M. Kilpatrick
Generation No. 1
1. FRANCIS M.2 KILPATRICK (KILPATRICK1) was born 1823 in Georgia, and died
Aft. 1900 in Upshur Co., TX. He married SUZANNE RICHBOURG Abt. 1849 in
Unknown, daughter of JOHN RICHBOURG and AGNES KOLB. She was born Abt. 1832
in South Carolina, and died Bet. 1870 - 1880 in Upshur County, Texas.
Notes for FRANCIS M. KILPATRICK:
Notes for the Saga of Francis M. Kilpatrick will be put here for future use
to include correspondence, wills, notes, etc.:
According to the pension application of Francis M. Kilpatrick, he was born
in 1823 in Georgia. This is his own recollection in June of 1899. He
states that he moved to Upshur Co., TX in 1869. At this time, he is 76
years old, totally blind and disabled. No death date for his wife, Suzanne,
is listed. She had to have died in Upshur Co., TX, after 1870.--kb
I joined Ancestry.com and through that subscription have access to many of
the US Census records on-line. For $129/year, it has so far been a great
help and worth the money. Searching the census records this way is slow and
it's much better if you at least know a county within the state to search.
The information sent to you about Francis is from the 1870 Upshur County
Texas Census. I've been tracking back through the years to find earliest
records of various members of the family in Texas, with hopes of finding
links to information in other states.
In the 1900 Upshur Census, Francis is still alive at 80 years and living
with his daughter Levonia (Coughlin) and her son Raymond, a grandaughter
Mabel McGregor and Francis' son William H.
I haven't had time to check the correct section of the 1910 census in Upshur
yet.
In the 1920 Upshur Census, William H is living alone and Francis is not
listed.
More when I find it.
Martha, the Randolph County clue could make life a great deal easier.
THANKS!
Steve
Hi Kathleen,
I still haven't zeroed in on Francis Kilpatrick's ancestors, but in the
process of looking, I ran across this bit of information in the 1870 census.
Looks like there were more children than I was aware of.
It also adds credence to the belief that Francis was born in Georgia and
Suzanne in South Carolina.
All of the children but the last were born in Alabama, the last being born
in Texas.
I'm trying to imagine being the father of a newborn at age 47. I might have
been optimistic at that age, but with the added perspective of being 60 it
sounds daunting. I guess with all of the other children around, there was
plenty of help.
Hope this finds you well.
Cheers,
Cousin Steve
Francis served with the 57th Alabama Infantry, CSA, for three years. What
follows is a short bio of that unit:
Fifty-Seventh Alabama
Infantry Regiment
This regiment was organized at Troy, in Pike, March 1863, as part of the
brigade of Gen. Clanton of Montgomery. It was stationed at Mobile and
Pollard till January 1864, when it moved to Demopolis. Brigaded there under
Gen. Buford, (soon succeeded by Gen. Scott) with the Twelfth Louisiana,
Twenty-seventh, Thirty-fifth, and Fifty-fifth Alabama and a Louisiana
regiment, the Fifty-seventh joined the Army of the Tennessee in time to
share fully the hardships of the Dalton-Atlanta campaign. The casualties of
the regiment, however, were not severe till the battle of Peach-tree Creek,
when it was cut to pieces. The Fifty-seventh participated in the movement
into Tennessee, and at Franklin and Nashville its losses were again very
large. Transferred to North Carolina, the regiment fought at Bentonville
with severe loss. Its colors were there folded when the army was disbanded.

Ages, place of birth, and birth dates are approximate. It was calculated
from a census of Coffee Co., AL from 1850. William H. was listed as 1 year
old, Suzanna was listed as 18 years old, and Francis M. was listed as 26.
Dannie and Mary Suzanne were not yet born.
Francis Kilpatrick was a veteran of the Civil War for the state of Alabama.
On his application for a Civil War pension in 1899 in Upshur Co., TX, he is
listed as indigent and completely blind. Year of birth is 1823, according
to Francis, himself. It is very sad. I wish I could have known him. It is
also possible that he died and is buried in a surrounding county; possibly
Smith or Falls County, TX.--KB

Notes for SUZANNE RICHBOURG:
Death certificate for Dannie Kilpatrick Kennedy says that Suzanne was born
in North Carolina. We may never know. The 1870 Census for Upsur County, TX
says that she was born in South Carolina, which I would tend to agree with.
Her ancestors migrated from intial contact in Virginia beginning with
Reverend Claude Phillipe De Richbourg, to North Carolina, and then to
eventually settle in the Santee River region of South Carolina. She does
not appear on the 1880 census of Upshur Co., TX, so it is safe to assume
that she died between 1870 and 1880 and is probably buried in Upshur County,
TX. They question at this time is where? And when?--kb

at this time. Also, the birthdates are approximate based on census data
supplied by Steven B. Kay who sent me an image of said census courtesy of

It appears that Jefferson and Julia are twins; there is an inclusive arrow
on the image pointing to them both and they are listed as 4 years old making
them born about 1866.-kb

Kay owned a cotton gin and evidently the Kay family owned a lot of land and
cotton gins and were very prosperous farmers. Jack said too that aunt Sudie

I want to thank Phillip Hill, a cousin and a Kennedy descendant, for his
generous gift of information regarding the descendants of Nannie Kennedy,
daughter of our mutual Kennedy ancestor, Henry Clay Gentry Kennedy and
Marianna(Dannie) Kilpatrick Kennedy. His gift is priceless and I am forever
in his debt. I could not have found this alone. He is also the first I
have come in contact with who is in my direct Kennedy line outside of my
Kennedy-Sisson line. thank you, Phillip!--3/20/2000 KSB.

These Kilpatricks may be out of Iredell Co, NC but the use of
the name
Eleazer indicates a possible connection to the Lenoir Co
family. Maybe there
were two different families in Maurey Tenn or
it is entirely possible there
is some connection between the
Alexander Kilpatrick family and the Andrew
and Joseph families of
Iredell Co. It is something that needs to be looked
at
closer.
