Notes for SETH WEST: Industrial Issue of Kinston Free Press 1906: SETH WEST SETH WEST, the subject of this sketch, is the oldest child of the late W. H. WEST and NANCY MOYE WEST. He was born March 24, 1851, in Lenoir County, ten miles south of Kinston. His early education was received in the district schools and in this city. The first twenty-two years of his married life were spent on a farm in Sand Hill Township, this county. During this time, he also engaged in the mercantile and lumber business. He removed to Dover, N. C. in December 1897. Since then, he has been actively engaged in the lumber business, being now president of the Dover Lumber Company, which is represented on another page. Mr. West is one of the largest real estate owners in the counties of Lenoir and Craven and is very prominent in the business affairs of Dover. On June 11, 1874, he was happily married to Miss LAURA ANNA WEST, daughter of JACOB AND JULIA WEST. To this union were born fifteen children, ten of whom are living, one being Mrs. F. E. DIXON, and the wife of F. E. DIXON, one of our photographers. ... In 1896, Mr. TYNDALL entered business for himself, and since that time has been engaged in merchandising, farming, logging, and saw milling. In 1901, he was elected mayor of Dover. At that time W. A. WILSON was clerk and treasurer, and G. V. RICHARDSON, J. E. WARTERS, SETH WEST, and T. L. WEST, were on the board of aldermen. ... THE DOVER LUMBER CO. The Dover Lumber Company was incorporated in January 1906. The incorporators and officers are SETH WEST, president; J. H. WEST, Vice-President; D. W. RICHARDSON, secretary; and N. S. RICHARDSON, treasurer. The amount of capital stock authorized was $20,000, of which $6,000 was paid in. The company makes a specialty of North Carolina kiln dried pine gum and hardwood for fish boxes and cabbage crates. It is located in Dover and is a valuable addition to that growing town. It is a successor to the West and Parrott milling business, which was situated beyond the limits of the town. Now it bids fair to develop rapidly into a large lumber concern. Notes for MARGARET ANN WEST: I need to confirm with Parnell West whether this Margaret Ann West is the one who married James Lewis West, who would be her half-uncle.
Notes for GEORGE WEST: This George West must have died as an infant, because his brother George Kinnian West, born 1866, is listed near him on "The William Henry West family", typewritten by a child of William Closs West (half-brother to the two Georges). Moreover, George does not appear in the 1860 Federal Census.
Children of WILLIAM WEST and CARRIE SANDLIN are:
Notes for GEORGE V. RICHARDSON: Industrial Issue of Kinston Free Press, 1906: GEORGE V. RICHARDSON One of the leading merchants of Dover is GEORGE V. RICHARDSON, born on February 9, 1869, three miles from Dover, in Craven County. At the age of thirteen, he entered Davis Military School at LaGrange, remaining there three years. He graduated in military tactics, and returned to his father's farm, intending later on to enter Trinity College. Circumstances prevented his taking this step, and for three years, he taught in the public schools of his native county. In 1889, Mr. Richardson married Miss BLANCHE WEST, daughter of W. H. WEST, of Lenoir County. Soon after this, he went to Dover and entered the mercantile business where he has grown up with the town. He is superintendent of the Dover Methodist Sunday school, which has for several years been the banner school of the district. He is a mason, a member of the Junior Order, and a steward in the Methodist Church. For four years, Mr. Richardson has been a commissioner of Craven County, and superintendent of the county post. He is a member of the Democratic executive committee for Craven, and a member of the Democratic executive committee of the third congressional district. He has served as alderman and mayor pro tem of Dover. He is closely identified with the interests of the town, and is ready to endorse any measure that promises to be of benefit to his community and fellow citizens. He is a recognized leader and has the confidence of all. At Dover Mr. Richardson manages the correspondence for the Free Press, thereby making the paper of local value to the town. Notes for WILLIAM CLOSS WEST: Kinston Free Press - Industrial Issue 1906 - Sand Hill Township: W. C. WEST is one of progressive young men of Sand Hill township. He and his newly wedded wife are hospitality itself and they each place their shoulders to the wheel to make for themselves a prosperous home as it is a happy one. Mr. WEST was born on the W. H. WEST farm, which he now owns and where he resides. He is the son of WILLIAM HENRY and SUDIE D. WEST, both deceased. He was born May 1, 1882. His mother was the daughter of JAMES H. FOY, of Richlands, Onslow county. Mr. WEST'S father was a member of the board of county commissioners that ordered the county iron bridge to be built. He was a large land owner, owning several plantations. One thing CLOSS WEST takes pride in and that is that his mother was so active in abolishing the manufacture and sale of liquor in the township. In his boyhood days CLOSS attended the neighborhood schools; but he was compelled to give too close attention to duties of the farm to obtain a very extended education. He is one of the leading members of the Bethany Methodist Episcopal Church. He has now under cultivation about 120 acres of land and owns and operates a cotton gin. Recently Mr. WEST married Miss MATTIE, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. JOHN IVEY, of Seven Springs, Wayne county.

More About BRYAN CLINTON WEST: Burial: Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC Notes for SOPHIA C. WEST: Sophia is listed in the Lenoir County Death Record of her son Richard Bryant West as Sophia C. West (these records list mother by maiden name). She is mentioned in the obituary of Mary Ann West, who married Nicholas Hunter, as Mary Ann's half-sister (1910 Kinston Free Press). In the 1850 Federal Census for Lenoir County, NC, we find Sophia in the household of John C. West and wife Nancy. Nancy West (daughter of Thomas & Anna King, wife of John C. West) is buried in the King burying ground at Maplewood Cemetery, Kinston, NC. Sophia is listed as a neice in the will of Richard W. King, one time sheriff of Lenoir County, as is Mary Ann West Hunter. She is found with her children in the home of her uncle R. W. King in the 1870 Federal Census, after her husband Bryan was dead. All of this seems to confirm her identity as the daughter of John C. West and Nancy King.

Notes for TIFFANY WEST: Tiffany West never married, but she was a prominent citizen in Kinston, NC. Tiffany Street in Kinston is evidently named for her. According to the Kinston Industrial Free Press of 1906, Tiffany was a member of the board of Robert Bruce McDaniel Memorial Hospital and a member of the Finance and Auditing Committee.

Notes for CAPT. SPEIGHT BROCK WEST: Speight Brock West was born November 29, 1835 to Kinnian and Catherine West of Craven County, North Carolina. He grew up farming with his father, until he married Hollon Kilpatrick of Kinston, Lenoir County, NC on December 20, 1855. He went to work as a merchant in Kinston, where he appears on the 1860 Federal Census with his wife Hollon and three-year old son Herbert Gerald. On April 12, 1861, shots were fired on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, and the Civil War had begun. On May 16, 1861, at the age of 26, Speight enlisted in Company D of the 5th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, Confederate Army. He was appointed 1st Lieutenant, and served until he was transferred to Company E and promoted to Captain. Speight was wounded in the right arm and captured at Williamsburg, Virginia May 5, 1862. He was confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, until exchanged on August 13, 1862. Speight led the 5th North Carolina into battle under General Iverson at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1-3, 1863, and was wounded in the left shoulder. He rejoined Company E on September 13, 1863, and served until wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 8-21, 1864. He rejoined the Company prior to October 19, 1864, when he was wounded in the head at Cedar Creek, Virginia, and retired to the Invalid Corps on March 27, 1865. By the end of the war, Speight's wife Hollon had passed away, leaving him with his little boy Herbert. On April 2, 1867, Speight remarried, this time to Sarah Ann Becton of Craven County, North Carolina. By 1900, they had moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they ran a boarding house. Speight and Sarah had eleven children. Speight passed away on June 3, 1908, and was buried in Section E, Lot 127 of Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia. His widow Sarah lived on until 1931, when she was laid to rest beside him. Note that one of the Civil War records lists his name as Speight BrockHURST West, but with no confirmations of that, I believe that his middle name was simply Brock, like others in the family.

Notes for HERBERT GERALD WEST, SR.: Herbert Gerald West and Nancy Maple Webb West were born in the area of Kinston, Lenoir County, NC. After marriage, they lived for a time in the home of her father, Rev. James Barney Webb. The couple first came to Waynesville, Haywood County, NC on April 21 of 1884, according to their daughter Jean. This was after the birth of daughter Jean Meyer West and son Herbert Gerald West, Jr., as confirmed by Jean Meyer West's Bible. Herbert and Nancy's younger children John Webb West and Sybil Margaret West were born in Waynesville. Sybil Margaret was taken by a diptheria epidemic before her eighth birthday. Herbert is identified in the 1900 Federal Census for Haywood County, NC (ED#32) as a salesman in dry goods. The 1920 Census lists him as a bookkeeper. His grandson John Webb West, Jr. says that he was a bookkeeper at the "England, Walton, & Co." Tannery, where his daughter Jean and son John worked in the commisary. By 1930, Herbert, Jean, and John had gone into business for themselves with the HGWest Coal Company, later just West Coal Company. The West family were all members of the First Methodist Church of Waynesville. Their house was on Water Street in Waynesville (later renamed Killian Street), bordered in front by the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railroad, and in the back by Richland Creek. Three generations are buried in the West plot at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.

Notes for INA VISTULA WEST: This unmarried aunt lost five years from her age between the 1900 Census (age 25, born Nov. 1874) and the 1910 Census (age 30). Evidently, she carried this new age to her death, as her marker in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, lists her as born in 1879! The 1880 Census listed her as 4 years old, which would have put her birth in 1875, but it would seem that the more detailed 1900 Census is probably the correct one.
