rejected.). She died after 1860 in Duplin County, North Carolina. Martha and her mother lived with her brother, William in 1810. In 1850 she along with her mother lived with her brother in law James Summerlin and in 1860 she lived with Lemuel Summerlin - all in Duplin County. She never married.
Generation Two 3. Hannah2 HARDISON (James1) was born on 24 Mar 1786 in Pitt or Greene County, North Carolina (Ibid.). She married James Summerlin. She died before 1850. On the 1850 Census in Duplin County in the household of James Summerlin are Martha HARDISON, age 61 and Lucretia HARDISON age 88. Lucretia was his mother in law and Martha was his sister in law. Hannah appears to have been deceased. Also in the household were Lemuel 26, Charity 23, and Lucretia 30 Summerlin. According to the census, we are missing a number of children. James Summerlin was born circa 1771 in Duplin County, North Carolina (Alexander William Barwick Family Bible, (1955 in posession of Miss Lela Barwick, Copy in "Dobbs County Bible Records" by William Murphey Vol 11).). He died in Duplin County, North Carolina (Ibid.). Children of Hannah2 HARDISON and James Summerlin were as follows:
4. Harmon2 HARDISON (James1) was born on 9 Jan 1788 in Greene County, North Carolina (Widow's Pension Application of Lucretia HARDISON.). He married Elizabeth (HARDISON). The earliest we can place Harmon in Duplin County was 17 April 1826 when his name appears on the Will of James Outlaw as a witness. It is not clear where Harmon lived before moving to Duplin to join the rest of the family. James HARDISON believes the Harmon found on the census in Beaufort was the son of Isaac, brother of James. There was a Harmon in Edgecombe County in 1810 and in 1830. According to the census, Harmon and Elizabeth had at least two sons and one daughter, but none are proven. These two sons are speculation on the part of James HARDISON. 6. William2 HARDISON (James1) was born in Pitt or Greene County, North Carolina, circa 1791 (Ibid.). He married Mary Ann (Polly) Dail, daughter of Thomas Dail and Sarah Tripp, in Duplin County, North Carolina, on 27 Jul 1815 ( Marriage License.). William died circa 1846 in Wayne or Duplin County, North Carolina. William moved to Duplin County from Greene County with his mother and siblings when he was a young man, as he was found on the Duplin County census in 1810 when he was only 19 years old. His mother and sister, Martha, were probably living with him as two females of their ages were listed in his home. He lived in the Glisson District which is bordered by Wayne County on the north, Highway 11 on the east, Scott's Store on the west, and Goshen swamp on the south. William and Polly married about 27 July 1815 and their Marriage Bonds are located in the Duplin county Courthouse. Benjamin Herring was the bondsman and William Dickerson was the witness. William served his country during the War of 1812. The US Military Archives contains the records of his service during the period. He was a private in Captain John E. Hussey's Company and served from 17 October 1814 until 10 March 1815, when the Company was discharged. He received $36.91 as payment for this length of service, but 25 cents was deducted for the repair of a musket. Mary HARDISON applied for a widow's bounty land and she gives us a little information on her application. She states that she had already received a small bounty and disposed of it. We have not been able to find any deeds regarding this bounty, but it was probably in Tennessee. Mary states that her husband died in Wayne County in 1846 and that he was stationed at Greenfield near Wilmington during the war. We have not been able to find any estate records for William in Wayne County. A careful search of the Duplin and Wayne County Deed Books has not located any land belonging to William. It has been very difficult to obtain much information on this couple and at this point, there is NO proof of their children. The list of children is pure circumstantial. Public Records show that William Jr. was born in Duplin County and the 1850 Wayne County Census states that Thomas was also born in Duplin County. The only HARDISON in Duplin County at the time of their births was William. Harmon did not arrive until around 1826. William and Mary had other children as the 1840 Census lists five males under 20 in his household but they have not been identified. James HARDISON in Cumberland County may also be a son. 8. James H.3 Summerlin (Hannah2HARDISON, James1) married Mary Ann (Polly) Taylor in 1831 in Duplin County, North Carolina. James must have died and Mary Ann remarried as the Marriage Bonds for Nancy Books who md Harper Williams in 1871 gave her parents as James G. Summerlin and Mary Ann Hughes. From GenForum In your message, you mention James H. Summerlin. I have a listing for James H. Summerlin as the father of Giles Everett Summerlin who was born in Duplin Co., NC on July 29, 1849. My only information about James was that he was married to Mary Ann (Polly) Taylor. FamilySearch's record on Mary Ann Taylor lists her birth as 10 Feb. 1812 in Duplin Co., NC and notes her marriage to James H. Summerlin (AFN: 2XK3-XO) on 8 Feb., 1831 in Duplin Co., NC. What other information do you have on James H. Summerlin or his ancestors. Giles E. Summerlin was my great grandfather on my father's side. He is buried in Kinston, NC He died on Nov. 2, 1910. His wife was Sarah Elizabeth Outlaw, b. Sept. 2, 1828, d. Feb. 4, 1911. Their seventh child was Beulah Marvin Summerlin, my grandmother who was born on Jan. 31, 1891 and d. on Dec. 16, 1949. 13. Joshua3 HARDISON (Harmon2, James1) was born CA 1810-1815. He married Elizur Jane (HARDISON). He married Susan (HARDISON). James HARDISON speculates that Joshua may have been named after Joshua HARDISON Sr. of Greene County who lived near the James HARDISON family. According to the census, Joshua was a cooper. He married Rebecca Parker on 10 Feb 1835 in Duplin County, North Carolina (Bondsman Thomas Deal, WIT James Dickerson) (Marriage License.). He died between 1840 and 1846 in Duplin County, North Carolina. James HARDISON believes that Jesse, whose Marriage Bonds are located in the Duplin County Courthouse, was the eldest son of William but there is no proof. Jesse's children are based on the Census records. Children of Jesse3 HARDISON and Rebecca Parker all born in Duplin County, North Carolina, were as follows:

He died in 1898 in Duplin County, North Carolina. This line has been researched by James HARDISON who did all the early research on this family. It is written up in the Craven County Heritage Book. 17. Thomas Henry3 HARDISON (William2, James1) was born in Duplin County, North Carolina, circa 1820. He married Margaret Dail, daughter of Curtis Dail and Mary Sanderson, in Duplin County, North Carolina, circa 1841. Thomas died circa 1880 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. There is nothing to prove Thomas was the son of William and Polly Dail HARDISON so his parentage is by process of elimination. Marrgaret's parents are proven and their marriage is proven but various deeds in Cumberland and Duplin Counties document the marriage. They were first cousins. Thomas and Margaret moved from Duplin to Wayne County where they are found on the 1850 Census. Thomas was listed as a cooper. They were in Lenoir County by 1860 in the area between LaGrange and Wheat Swamp near what is now called HARDISON's crossroads. Since Thomas voted in Wayne County in 1859 they must have moved that year. Thomas was listed as an overseer. It is of interest that both Thomas and Margaret could read and write, a skill they did not pass on to their children. Their daughter Clarissa married in Wayne County in 1859 and there was an Elizabeth who married that year to Joshua Hinton. Who as she? Margaret's mother, Mary Sanderson Dail, left her inherited land to her children, and Thomas and Margaret sold their part to Thomas's brother, William, who had moved to Cumberland County. There are several land transactions in Wayne County in the 1870's involving Thomas, but since he was living in Lenoir County at the time, it is not clear why he would be buying and selling land in Wayne County unless he inherited it from his father. According to the U.S. Military Archives, Thomas served briefly in the Civil War. He was a Private in Co E. 61st Regiment, NC Troops, entered service in 1862 at the age of 42 as a volunteer. He was discharged in 1862. He was also on a Company Muster at Camp Musgrove on May 26, 1862, born in Lenoir County. He served in the 3rd Reg.t, NC inf. and was wounded on July 1 1862 in the battles before Richmond, Virginia. Thomas outlived Margaret as we find him on the 1880 Lenoir Census living by himself. No middle name appears for him but Rebecca HARDISON Vause said her grandfather's name was Thomas Henry and in the Lenoir County Cross Indices there is a reference to Thomas Henry HARDISON, Jr.; therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Thomas, son of William, was a Sr. The tombstone at the Taylor Cemetery for Thomas Jr is a Civil War stone the family had placed there in the 1990's but it is in error. It was Thomas Sr not Jr who served in the Civil War. In July of 2001, Ray HARDISON provided the following information: At this same cemetery in the plot where Frank's family is buried there is a tombstone with "Thomas HARDISON" no dates. This is the grave of an adult, has a headstone and foot stone. I have no record of Frank having a child by the name of Thomas, soooo this could be our Thomas Sr. The cemetery is the Hinson Family Cemetery near Castoria in Greene Co. Cemetery located about 1/2 mile north of Castoria on Highway 91 going toward Walstonburg. Ray said that Frank moved to Greene County prior to 1890. There is really not another Thomas HARDISON that this stone could be for except our Thomas which indicates he moved to Greene County and probably lived with his youngest son, Franklin, prior to his death. _ Information on this family is non existent and the list of children comes from the Census Records and family traditions. She married Stephen Holmes on 6 Apr 1871 in Duplin County, North Carolina (Ibid.). Mary Ann had at least two children by Stephen Holmes long before she was married to him or to David Goodman. The children appear to have used the HARDISON name. There were no children of Mary Ann3 HARDISON and David Goodman. Children of Mary Ann3 HARDISON and Stephen Holmes both born in Duplin County, North Carolina, were as follows:
W H HARDISON, 71 yrs, 12-24-1918 Loula Goodman, 4-1-1888 10-2-1918. Caroline HARDISON, 12-14-1854 12-6-1917. Generation Four 34. Jesse James4 Summerlin (James3, Hannah2HARDISON, James1) was born on 23 Feb 1832 in Duplin County, North Carolina. He married Catherine Dail, daughter of Curtis Dail and Mary Sanderson, on 2 Jan 1853 in Duplin County, North Carolina. He died on 15 Feb 1864 in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 31. He was buried in Hughes Cemetery,, Duplin County, North Carolina. Jesse was hung by the Confederates in Kinston NC as a traitor. His tombstone says "Sgt Co. F 2nd NC Inf. CSA" (no dates). The CSA is confusing since the 2nd NC regiment, Co. F was a Union Army. The Hughes Cemetery is located on SR 1522, 1 mile east of Junction 1522 & 1502 on the south side on a dirt road in the woods. Catherine Dail was born circa 1839 in Duplin County, North Carolina. She married Ruel W. Wetherington, son of William Wetherington and Lovie (Wetherington), on 20 May 1866 in Craven County, North Carolina. She died on 10 Oct 1873 in Craven County, North Carolina. Information from Lonne Heath for this branch of the family. lonneheath@coastalnet.com Notes for Catherine Dail: Catherine's first husband, Jesse Summerlin, was a fellow Union Soldier with Ruel Wetherington. Jesse and Ruel were captured together at Bachelor's Creek by the Confederates and put in the jailhouse in Kinston, NC. Jesse was unfortunate in that he was one of the 21 out of 55 soldiers who was hung as traitors to the Confederacy. Many of these soldiers were never in the Confederate Army and had joined the Union Army from the beginning of the war. Catherine was several months pregnant when they hung her husband. She was present at the hanging and had to look away when they kicked the board out from under him. When he was dead, the hangman stripped Jesse of all his clothes, which was his pay for doing the hangings. The Confederates then stole all of Catherine's food and chattle, leaving her and her children destitute. She then had to bury her husband. Catherine's and Jesse's last child was born four months later and she named him Jesse James Summerlin, Jr. Ruel married Catherine shortly after the war was over. They had three children together before she died. I have not been able to find Catherine's tombstone yet. Her first husband, Jesse Summerlin (Somerlin) was buried in Hughes Cemetery in Duplin County, but I have not been able to find Catherine in that same cemetery. Marriage Notes for Catherine Dail and Jesse Summerlin: Bride: Catherine Dail Groom: Jesse J Sumlin Bond Date: 02 Jan 1853 County: Duplin Record #: 01 081 Bondsman: Lemuel Sumerlin Witness: John J Whitehea Bond #: 000042460. Information on this family from Dr. W. Alexander Mewborn, nephew of Ima Mewborn who descends from Florence Kennedy who married Edward S. Mozingo. Alex received his information from Ruby Kenney Briggs daughter of Sim Kennedy. They lived in Institute, Lenoir Co and White Hall in Wayne County. I can't find him on the 1850 or 1860 Lenoir Co Census. Alex states he served in CSA - Co H., 2nd Reg., NC and Co E, 61st Reg, NC May have been another child. 61. Christopher4 HARDISON (Thomas3, William2, James1) was born circa 1845 (Tombstone.). He married Hettie Mariessa Wallace circa 1872. He died on 11 Nov 1929 in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Ibid.). He was buried in Dalys Chapel Church,, Lenoir County, North Carolina. His tombstone says he was born in 1845 but that does not agree with the Census reports. Most of the information on this family was given to me first by Mrs. Sadie HARDISON Farmer, the granddaughter of Christopher. Much more has been filled by his other descendants - Lisa Haynes and Debbie Grant who are great great grandchildren as well as people on the Lenoir List. Lisa and Debbie stated that the information was given to them by Hettie, Sadie and Lela, grandaughters of Christopher. Information on Paul's family was given by his daughter Linda Kay Eubanks and John and Lola's children by the children themselves. Kay Becton Ogle - PEPPERSHSE@aol.com - provided a report on the first three generations of the family that filled in a lot of empty spots. My thanks to her. Christopher and Hettie lived near what is today HARDISON's Crossroads. Cousin Sadie said he was reared on the Hodges Place near the Crossroads. According to Sadie, Chris was a bit of a colorful character. The marriage date is based on the information from Sadie that Hettie was only 13 years old when they married. Hettie Mariessa Wallace was born circa 1859. She died in 1947 in Lenoir County, North Carolina (Ibid.). She was buried in Dalys Chapel Church,, Lenoir County, North Carolina. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BY DESCENDANTS 64. Thomas Henry4 HARDISON (Thomas3, William2, James1) was born in Duplin County, North Carolina, circa 1847. He married Rebecca Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and Mary E. Bryant, in Duplin County, North Carolina, circa 1865. He married Julia West, daughter of Fred West and Martha Priscilla Johnson, circa 1892. Thomas died circa 1896 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. His body was interred in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Johnson Cemetery. This family lived in the Woodington District in 1880. According to Kate White, Thomas' only living child in 1985, Tom was buried in the Johnston Family Cemetery between Southwood and Woodington. His tombstone was wooden and is long gone. It is assumed that Rebecca was also buried there but his 2nd wife, Julia, was buried at Maplewood. Rebecca HARDISON Vause took me to the cemetery many years ago and showed me the exact place he was buried and descendants obtained a Civil War headstone for the spot. Obtaining a Civil War Stone was in error as it was his father who served in the Civil War not Thomas Jr. It is not clear to me if Thomas owned land or not but he is on the Cross Indices several times so he probably did. He had no Will and there are no pictures of him that anyone is aware of. _ Not much is known about Thomas or Rebecca. Additional information especially dates on Julia and her children came from Larry Johnson - ljoh3106@earthlink.net He also names a son Thomas for Kate. Rebecca Taylor was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, circa 1847. Rebecca died before 1888 in Lenoir County, North Carolina. Frank and Bettie moved to Carrs Township prior to 1890 and lived between Castoria and Walstonburg near the Jarvis Holloman farm. Ray said the tradition states that Frank would ring a bell every morning to get his children up. After he got his boys up, he would get them started on their chores for the day, he would then hook his horse to the buggy and ride around the farm making sure everyone was working. Mary Elizabeth (Bettie) Rouse was born on 31 Dec 1861 (Ibid.). She died on 13 Jun 1909 in Greene County, North Carolina, at age 47 (Ibid.). The children: Hardy was out working in the fields, Marcellus (to the left), Adel in his father's lap, Marion (standing up), Felix (standing up) Becky who was about 11 at the time. The family moved across the river ca 1914 - I am not sure which side). He was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Dec 1867. He married Martha Emma Barwick, daughter of Richard Barwick and Sarah (Sallie) H. Simmons, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on 4 Feb 1891. 1902. (The Southwestern Company, Nashville, Tenn.); East Carolina University, Joyner Library, Manuscript Division.). He married Martha Virginia Grubbs, daughter of John Thomas Grubbs and Eliza Ann Fields, in Lenoir County, North Carolina, circa 1914. Felix died on 13 Aug 1978 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, at age 83. His body was interred in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, in Maplewood Cemetery. Felix and Martha lived on a farm she inherited from the Fields family located between Savannah School and Taylor's Crossroads. Any old pictures or heirlooms were burned with the house when their children were small with the exception of a couch from the Fields family that someone had borrowed. After the fire, the couch was not returned but a small marble top table owned by the Fields family was brought to them and I have that table today given to me by Aunt Margaret Hill. Felix was known as one of the best farmers in his area and right up to his death could be seen working on his farm from sun-up to sun-down. His sweet potatoes were the best in the state. My father said Felix could measure board feet in his head faster than later generations could use a calculator. Felix farmed and at one time owned a sawmill. He also had a curing barn that smelled like old hams which he used to cure. According to Proctor, he had a store across from the home before Uncle Harry had a store and he had a bear in a cage. Felix only had a 6th grade education as he had to start farming to help support his mother and younger siblings once his father died an untimely death. Proctor told me that on the rare occasion I was taken as a baby down to visit, it was Granddaddy who changed my diaper and looked after me. Like most HARDISONs, he was a very good looking young man and had a head full of black hair even when he died. Martha was rather raised with a silver spoon in her hand so I have been told. To my knowledge she never worked on the farm. She was very musically talented but never took any lessons. She had a piano and used to play and it is also my understanding she could play several other instruments althought I don't remember her ever doing so. She enjoyed poor health and even though I was an adult when she died, I never remember her not being sick. The last years of her life, she was deaf and blind and then lost her mind. Her son, Daniel, took loving care of her. We think she may have had Parkinsons Disease but it was never diagonised. I regret that we were never close to these grandparents.
