Generation Two 3 . MATTHEW 2 CARR ( Robert1 ) was born inNansemond County, Virginia, circa 1738 (Ibid.). He married ElizabethWilkinson. Matthew died circa 1797 in Hertford County, North Carolina. Try both Knox County and Tipton Co, Tenn for this family - Matthewand Robet H. Carr Mathew Carr - b l738 - d ca 1799 - md Elizabeth (Wilkinson accordingto DAR application and the papers of Lula Carr Payne) - No proof although there are dealings between Matthew and the Wilkinsonfamily in Northampton Co., N.C. We are more inclined to think he married a Parker or he could have had two wives. Mrs. Payne said there are Pension Papers for the Revo at the Archivesfor Matthew. The pension was paid to his widow, Elizabeth Wilkerson Carr. My search at the archives could not find thispension. The guns used by Matthew are now in the possession of M Carr Payne of Atlanta. According to l790 Census Records two males over 16 plus Matthew andthree females in addition to his probble wife in his household and 9 slaves and the l779 Tax List gives Matthew and RobertCarr together indicating Robert was a son who was at least l6 years old. Lawrence was already on his own in l790. With Robert being on the 1779 Tax list, he would have been born nolater than 1763. There is no proof that Robert was a son but usually it was a son on the Tax List although he could have been anephew. On the 1800 Census, Matthew was already dec and it appears theElizabeth on the Hertford Census was his widow. There were no males in the household - 2 females 16-26, 1 female over 45; 6 slaves.On this census Lawrence had picked up 5 slaves so it appears those came from his father. On this same census is Lawrence - 3 malesunder 10, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-44; 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26, l female 26-44; 9 slaves and Robert - Robert - 2 malesunder 10, 2 males 16-26, 1 male 26-44; 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 26-44, 1 female over 45; 12slaves. The latter Robert would not have been the son of Robert of Nansemond. This Robert would be inconsistent with a son of 16 in1779 unless the census was off. Some of the information on this line came from the papers of LulaCarr Payne now dec. She did extensive work on the family but we don't have all of her papers. From Ruth I was at VA Archives for a few days recently, going through someSouthampton Co. records looking for someone else and came across a suit involving Titus Carr. he signed CARR but body of suit calledhim KERR. His bro. Joshua Carr made a deposition from Hertford Co., NC. No date given for the depo. but the one before it forsomeone else, also from Hertford, was 24 July 1773. Lawrence died circa 1810 in Greene County, North Carolina. Lawrence d l803 very suddenly while at the dinner table in GreeneCounty, N.C. according to Mrs. Payne. There are records to indicate he died later than l803. Although Mrs. Payne states Lawrencemd Martha Ann Barrett and she was the mother of Matthew H., I am inclined to think Martha Ann was the stepmother IF she was aBarrett. Lawrence was married and had children before he left Hertford County. Without question he married a Hart. Mrs. Payne saidMartha Ann remarried a Hart and had 5 children but there is no evidence of that and it is rather doubtful and this may be where thefamily tradition got a little mixed up. It probably should havebeen that Lawrence married a Hart and had 5 children. That would be almostperfect fit IF Argent was indeed a daughter and the unlinked Margaret was a daughter. This abstract was taken from #2440 but 4310 was checked briefly. In thefolder 4310 the only difference I saw was TILGHMAN HOLLIDAY was referred to several times as JOHN HOLLIDAY and the datewas 1847. It is possible that a close reading of the case would indicate that TILGHMAN HOLLIDAY had died but I noticed in theindex cards there were several cases with the same names with different numbers. Time was a problem in reading the 2nd folderin detail. SARAH CARR guardian of ROBERT CARR a lunatic against TILGHMANHOLLIDAY - filed 20 December 1835 ROBERT CARR was the son of ROBERT S. CARR dec and SARAH CARR - by thedeath of his father ROBERT CARR became entitled to property of a considerable estate consisting of land,Negroes and money - value of $10,000 to $12,000 - for sometimehad symptoms of derangement and insanity - he became 21 years of age on10 Jan 1829 - since becoming 21 he has been duped and taken advantage of and lead to intoxication in order to get hisproperty TILGHMAN HOLLIDAY of Greene County continued to defraud him -HOLLIDAY purchased a Negro woman Pansey or Fanny and her child worth about $350, and a Negro man named Dempsy worth about$250 or $300 and 1/3 of a tract of land called Haw Landing worth about $400 or $500 for which HOLLIDAY only paid with a studhorse worth about $150 or $200, a Negro boy Henry aged 6 or 7 years worth $150, a note for $140 on a credit of 12 months, a noteon NATHAN LASSITER for $60 or $70 and a judgement on WILLIAM POPE for $94.35 - SARAH CARR says this is insufficientconsideration HOLLIDAY resold the Negro woman Pansey/Fannie and child back to saidROBERT CARR for $400 SARAH CARR asked HOLLIDAY in a friendly manner to cancel the contractand he refused (there should be another page right here but it appears to bemissing) HOLLIDAY answers - he says ROBERT not a lunatic - and he did not takeadvantage of him. HOLLIDAY sold ROBERT the stud horse first on a note and then ROBERT sold him the Negro boy Edmundto pay the note and the horse was worth $400 - Negro boy Edmund was worth $300 - then ROBERT sold Pansey/Fannie to HOLLIDAY -ROBERT had purchased a 1/3 part of Haw Landing using Pansey/Fannie as part payment (does not state from whom hepurchased Haw Landing) NOTE: In places the name of the Negro woman looked like Pansey and insome Fannie HOLLIDAY says all property was worth Boy Edmund was deficient in eyesight and worth only $250 Dempsey was worth $400 1/3 of Haw Landing purchased for $400 sold for $300 - land wasimproved HOLLIDAY would take the stud horse back if SARAH would pay for theseason ROBERT was declared a lunatic on 6 April 1829 and the transactionswith HOLLIDAY were 10 Jan 1829 BEFORE ROBERT was declared a lunatic At this point in the case there were numerous depositions and fromthe number of them most everyone in that section of the county made a deposition and mostly said the same thing. ALLEN - knew father from the time he was 10 years old WYATT MOYE - questioned his mental ability RUFFIN GRAINGER - thought him deranged - in 1820 when he taughtROBERT at school in Sandy Run he was ok - 3 years later he was drunk THOMAS MOORE - mind not sound BLANA BRAND - not good mind HENRY DAIL - in sound mind - knew the family and as a child ROBERTwas not of as good a mind as his brother LEWIS ?? CHARLES JOINER - not capable EASON JOINER - lived 3 miles from him - lived with SARAH CARR forawhile in 1832 and he died in 1833 (assume he was referring to ROBERT S. CARR) MICAJAH HART - did not know him well but he was a drunk WILLIAM SILABINT?? - not of sound mind FLETCHER ORMOND - did not know him well JOHN EASON - not of sound mind GATSY SILAVANT - weak minded LOUIZA EASON - not sure what to think WILLIAM G. HUDSON - was a WIT to the various Bills of Sale and didnot see anything out of the ordinary - lived at Haws Landing at time of sale - stated that HOLLIDAY did make improvements -HOLLIDAY did not get CARR drunk - sometimes ROBERT was rations and sometimes not - lived with HOLLIDAY before moving to HawLanding HENRY MILLER - never saw him perfectly sober WADE BUTTS - did not know him well WILLIAM ORMOND - never sober THEOPHILUS DAIL - did not know him well HENRY DAIL - not well acquainted BLANEY TURNAGE - not capable There were many other deposition but all said the same thing At the end of the case it states that ROBERT CARR is deceased but itis not clear if he died before or during the case.
