Simon Bright/Nancy Bright Widow's Pension Application-S9293

This Pension Application was transcribed and submitted by Billy Markland

Note From Francis R. Hodges:

Richard Bright, son of John Bright (d. 1720) and brother of Simon Sr,. had a son named Simon Bright. I suspect this Simon may come down that line somehow. The Creasey's found the records of this Simon's service in the revolution, and assumed he was from the Lenoir County Simon Brights. He wasn't--at least that is my opinion. Probably a cousin of them.

Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions-February Term 1833

On this the twelfth day of February 1833, personally appeared before the Worshipful Bythel Haynes, Josiah Nye, and Robert Ward Justices of the Peace for said County, holding said Court Simon Bright a Resident of the County of Columbus aged sixty nine years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, passed June 7th 1832-That he enlisted in the army of the Untied States, on the Continental establishment in the Year 1780 or 1781, in a Company commanded by Capt. James Mills, in a Regiment commanded by Col. Armstrong in the North Carolina line under the following named officers for a period of twelve months.

Major Griffith [I?] McKee was Major of the Regiment, and Capt. Mills as stated commanded the Company, and Col. Armstrong was Colonel but he has no recollection of any other Company or Regimental officers. He was but fifteen Years old, then a resident of the County of Bladen, when he enlisted at Elizabethtown in said County-marched thence with the Company to Wilmington NC-thence on the seaboard by the way of Georgetown, & within ten Miles of Charleston, to Pon Pon, South of Charleston, and then the Head Quarters of Genl Greenes Army, and there joined what was called a North Carolina Regiment under the command of Col Armstrong-After remaining there sometime, Major McKee who had been acquainted with him from his infancy, in consideration of his youth and size, had him arranged as a Servant to Major Doherty of the Continental army-From Pon Pon, he accompanied Major Doherty, (who was ordered on the recruiting service) to Hillsboro and Salisbury, North Carolina; between these two places, he was taken sick, and on arriving at the latter place, he was placed by Major Doherty in the Laboratory, where they were preparing fixed ammunition, until his health was restored, when he was ordered by Major Doherty to accompany Major [Hayes?], another Continental officer, who was engaged in the public Service-in different parts of the State-he accompanied him to Fayetteville and Salisbury, and several times to General Greens camps-While at Salisbury on one occasion, there was great rejoicing he believes in Consequence of the surrender of Cornwallis. He continued with Major [Hayes?] until the expiration of his term of service and was directed by him to return home from Fayetteville. He was directed, as well as recollected, to apply to Major McKee for a discharge-but he does not recollect ever to have received one, and if he did, he has lost it.

He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the Agency of any State.
